Christian James Meredith OK, let's go with this then:
Niin makaa kuin petaa, ja niin metsä vastaa kuin sinne huudetaan. Christian James Meredith Ja, denni betulsann jho! Gobaik! Maria Weidner got it, translated only a few words.. famous idiom Maria Weidner what goes around, comes around. Wie man in den Wald hineinruft, so schallt es heraus. I guess? Christian James Meredith Basic intended meaning, good! But I'll be tortuous and insist that you translate the Finnish into English literally xD Maria Weidner But I can't translate the finish (and german) original into english. Sarah could do it, if you need the exact translation. Maria Weidner ok, wait..as one calls into the forest, so it echoes back. (little help from the internet) Maria Weidner or: what one shouts into the woods, that is what will echoe back. Christian James Meredith But it's the grammar structures in this phrase that are so lovely!
"The way you call into a forest" works enough as the intended meaning for part of it, but that's not what the Finnish says (it does indeed mention forests, and calling/shouting, but the order of the phrase is wrong, and there's more to the whole phrase than that. It's actually two idioms put together). Maria Weidner oooh, sh... ok, than I have to work harder Christian James Meredith Still correct for the intended meaning of part of it, but not the whole, and needs tweaking even for the part that it's right for. Maria Weidner huudetaan = a form of call? Maria Weidner ja niin metsä vastaa = and how the forest answers? Maria Weidner pedata = to make a bed? makaa = to lie down Maria Weidner ok,ok... as you make your bed, so you lie on it... first part Maria Weidner so hard in english.. and the forest answers as you shout into it Maria Weidner As you make your bed so lie on it and the forest answers as you shout into it.. oh dear, english!!! :/ Maria Weidner word by word: as you make your bed so you lie in it and so the forest answers as you shout into it Christian James Meredith Maria very close! Your first as/like needs to be switched around, and "you shout into it" needs to be more.. impersonal I guess? Think di- verbs in Indonesian Christian James Meredith I see you've switched phrases around! Maria Weidner ok, ok....finnish, no prob, romanian, no prob, ställa.. but english!!! Maria Weidner but the first phrase is the bed one? Christian James Meredith Ok, sorry the first bit before the forest gets mentioned *IS CORRECT*. You could just switch the two bits around to match the Finnish word order I guess, no big deal Maria Weidner wait, what are the two bits? Maria Weidner I've tried to translate word by word.. Christian James Meredith The two bits are the so..../as.... parts of the phrase. (e.g. the entire sentence is: so... as... and so... as...).
What you currently have done is switched the first two so... as... phrases around into as... so... I think? Christian James Meredith Don't worry about your English, this game is after all for learning I guess Maria Weidner we have ja(and) niin (how) metsä (forest) vastaa (answers) kuin (like) sinne (into, towards) huudetaan (is shouted) Maria Weidner So you make your bed as you lie in it?? Christian James Meredith Translate niin more like "so" and "kuin" more like "as". Christian James Meredith No no, you had it correct before Maria, but the two halves of the phrases were around the wrong way Maria Weidner phrase one: bed, phrase two: forest Christian James Meredith Let me show you what I mean:
Niin makaa kuin petaa, ja niin metsä vastaa kuin sinne huudetaan.
"as you make your bed so you lie in it and so the forest answers as you shout into it"
Makaa does not mean make a bed, and petaa does not mean lie in it. Maria Weidner As the forest answers so it's shouted into??? Christian James Meredith No Maria you're making it worse :O Maria Weidner but wictionary says so.. Christian James Meredith "it's shouted into" (not the "so"!) is *correct*! Maria Weidner so the forest answers as it's shouted into Maria Weidner but didn'T you say before my first part was correct?? Christian James Meredith Yes! Now you just need to use that so/as thing for the first phrase (bed making bits) Christian James Meredith Maria Weidner the first part (about bed making) was correct, but each half of the phrase was around the wrong way Maria Weidner so you lie in your bed as you make it!# Christian James Meredith Whoohoo! Yes! Now put them together! Maria Weidner So you lie in your bed as you make it, so the forest answers as it's shouted into it! Maria Weidner that was hard! Christian James Meredith Ah the "shouts" there is unnecessary... Unless you want to say "shouted into" instead of "called into" Christian James Meredith Maria but you got through it! Maria Weidner yes, typo, already corrected it Christian James Meredith Oh, grouse! Gotta love how Facebook really wasn't made for this game hahaha. Christian James Meredith Maria is the winner (again) then Maria Weidner yeah, I confused the words makaa and petaa Christian James Meredith Haha, I did the same too when i first saw the phrase. Makaa reminds me of "make" :-/ Maria Weidner yeah, maybe that's why! Ok, i'll go and learn another language, so I#ve something to post here Maria Weidner We really need new players!! I mean, there is a limit of languages we can offer! Maria Weidner Sarah you've missed the finnish round! Ok, next round! Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I can't tag Billy and Vincensiu! They don't appear anymore!
