Round 112

Round
<< 1< 111113 >282 >>
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström About the same as about me... :P Herecha go:

"Ställningen ställdes in; "Ställ fram stället i stället - ställstället - i stället" framställdes inställningen ställt."
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Let me guess - Swedish? ;)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Is indeed! ^^
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Wenn Fliegen hinter Fliegen fliegen, fliegen Fliegen Fliegen hinterher! :p
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Ja ja, das one ist old! ;)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner But the only one possible in German! :)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Really? :O We can make plenty of them in Swedish. :P
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Our nouns are normally very different from the verbs
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I see, in Swedish, verbs and nouns don't need much modification to switch category; pretty much like in English. :P Well, not quite.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner This one will be hard for me, I have no idea about swedish grammar..
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Well, viel Glück! Lycka till! :D
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Tack! :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I have the feeling that I can't translate it into english!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Hahaha! ^^
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Ok, it's too late and too many ställ, does one mean something like "cancel" , "stop" (einstellen?) the first one maybe? And Ställingen actions? Positions?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström "Einstellen" is a cognate, yes. Remember that Swedish has got phrasal verbs as well, where you separate the preposition and the verb proper. :P
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Yes, I realized this. Does fram mean here "in front of"?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Look it up! ^^ I'll help out later! :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Are ställingen Einstellungen ? Like on a Radio or something?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I did, there are different translations... :/ ok, I got to book a flight first, it's already too late, don't want to know how much it'll cost...
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Flight is booked, way to expensive, good night all!
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Good morning from eastern part of the world :p
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Ställningen ställdes in = the stand was set into?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner i stället means something like instead?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Dictionary says so! :D
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner The second part: stand in front of xxx (plural) instead?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Is ställdes passive?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Past tense, passive (according to Wiktionary)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo The second part should be stand in front of the stand* instead
*) Wiktionary says stället is definitive singular
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo framställa means to produce
-des again means past tense passive
framställdes means was produced?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Of cause, I mixed up - et and -en, - en can be an article or plural, et not!
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Ah, svenska! Tid att glänsa!
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку (That's probably too literal, but still.)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Since Wiktionary doesn't have an entry about inställning, let's build from ställningen

ställ = to stand
ställning = stand
ställningen = a stand

So
inställa = to cancel
inställning = cancellation?
inställningen = a cancellation?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Inställning is attitude!
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo An attitude was produced to stand? Hmm
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Ställningen is a figurative, defensive stand like: "we must make a stand!"
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo (ställt is supine form of our good ol' friend ställa)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo My bad, Wiktionary actually listed the definition of ställning as a stand (an unwavering position)

I didn't read in the brackets :P
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Framställa ( infinitive), has many meanings: present, picture, represent, manufacture.... ( bab.la)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo ställningen ställdes in = the unwavering position was set into
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo "Ställ fram stället i stället - ställstället - i stället" = "Stand in front of the stand instead - [ställstället] - instead"

I guess one of the "instead" shouldn't be there
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Maybe we can use it as a past participle, sorry I can't write what I mean in English.. :(
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку A stand was set up into; a stand in front of a house and [stället - another house or place?] - ställstället - i stället" framställdes inställningen ställt."
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo framställdes inställningen ställt = was produced to set the attitude
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo I think framställdes (was produced) refers to the quote
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner http://de.bab.la/woerterbuch/schwedisch-englisch/st%C3%A4llning#tr
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку I have "kontoinställningar" and "sekretessinställningar" in my account settings, so "inställningen" is probably related.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Framställa is not only to produce! Also read represent, picture...
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo bab.la shows some examples of inställningen as "stance"
http://en.bab.la/dictionary/swedish-english/inst%C3%A4llningen
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner In this case it means settings
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Yes, stand, stance, position.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo (wait, Maria Weidner, I am absorbing all hints, one by one :P )
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Aaaah, I know where this is going!
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo The stand was set (up) into; "Stand in front of the stand in a home - [ställstället] - instead" was made to set the stance
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo ställstället escapes most online dictionaries that I know
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку The position [resolution?] was formulated - a stand in front of a stand in the/a house - [ställstället] instead of [framställdes] [inställningen] [ställt].
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Using the logic of språkspelet = språk (language) + spelet (a game), ställstället = ställ (stand) + stället (a stand)
Wait... What???
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Oh, boy. If "cykelstället" is a bike-rack, then a ställstället could be a... rack-stand? As in the base on which the rack is built?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo There are two definitions of stället:
definite singular of ställ
definite singular of ställe

Earlier I used first definition

If I try with 2nd definition:
ställe n
* a place, a location, a position
* a home (especially in the countryside), a farm, a stead, a summer cottage

ställstället would mean a place/location/position of stand
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Дайте Нефть Из Баку, remember the quotation mark. I guess it will prevent "instead of [framställdes]" fragment
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Well, there are two definitions for ställ as noun too:
ställ n
* a stand (device to hold something upright or aloft)
* certain kinds of dress or clothing that cover most of the body
Should we try the dress definition? :P
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner *pusing
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Maria Weidner, indeed
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven That's part of the joke, hehehehe.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Well, it's a tongue-twister so it's not designed to make any sense whatsoever.
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven But … there is sense to it. Sort of. Just not a very meaningful kind of sense.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith "Ställningen ställdes in; "Ställ fram stället i stället - ställstället - i stället" framställdes inställningen ställt."

(The stand) was (set/tuned/cancelled): "(Produce/Place from) the (stand (thing that holds something up)) in the (stand) standstand - in the stand" was produced (yada yada yada whole bunch of other thoughts)

1st attempt: The position was set; "Stand in front of the stand in the stand - the stand-stand - instead" an a nonplussed feeling as produced

Probably better English, but looser translation

2nd attempt: The position had been made clear; "Stand in front of the stand by the stand - the stand-stand* - instead" an uneasy feeling was made.

(Problem: ställt is a supine, not a participle, but I can't figure out how to get it to work with framställdes, at least in English (in Esperanto I'm getting this whole -igxis -ite combination ;-) )

*stand-stand = a rack/stand/holdingup device for itself? How convenient! Must come from IKEA!
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Okay, lets test it:
Stand in front of the stand in a home - the dress stand - instead
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Or just follow Christian James Meredith and say:
Stand in front of the stand in a home - the stand-stand - instead
:P
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Oh yeah, a ställ can be a type of clothing too apparently? Or so wiktionary implies.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith I'm using this at the moment:
http://folkets-lexikon.csc.kth.se/folkets/#lookup&st%C3%A4ll&0
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку A position was formulated; "put in front of the house, instead of a dress-rack, a stand" [framställdes] [inställningen] [ställt].
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Oh I forgot the Folkets!
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo I don't know much about grammar, so I looked up supine in Wikipedia earlier:
Swedish the supine is used with an auxiliary verb to produce some compound verb forms (perfect forms).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supine
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Hmpf

The stance was set; "Stand in front of the stand in a home - the stand-stand/dress-stand - instead" was made to set the stance
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner hahahaha..
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ok, perfecting things a bit, using what we've all got:

The position was formulated; "Stand in front of the 'ställ'* on the rack - the ställrack - instead" was the feeling produced confusedly.

*ställ here being used directly from Swedish due to the lack of a decent English equivalent that I can see - replace with 'dress', 'coat', or less likely, 'rack' as is required.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith http://blogs.transparent.com/swedish/swedish-supines-and-past-participles-and-more-grammar/ < fun...
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Hang on, lemme tweak that some more
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку So the freaking supine is just a past participle?
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Sort of. Hehehehehehe.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Since it's only 2 mins till my curfew kick in, I wish you all good luck :D
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку A position was formulated; "put in front of the house, instead of a dress-rack, a stand" - (thus) such an attitude was presented.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Victor! Stop your kinky games with supines and give us answers!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Original:
"Ställningen ställdes in; "Ställ fram stället i stället - ställstället - i stället" framställdes inställningen ställt."

So far (attempting to naturalise it as much as possible - check previous versions!):
The stance was adjusted; "Stand in front of the 'ställ'* on the rack - the ställrack - instead" was the attitude produced confusingly.

*ställ still apparently referring to some garment, or possibly alluding to rack-ception.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ställbörjan! ;-)
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Wait, why did you put "instead" in that position? And where does "confusion" come from?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith i stället = instead.
Not sure where houses are getting involved though
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Wait
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith I see you've already got "instead" as well..
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ah, it was because "stället i stället - ställstället". The "- ställstället" to me implies that these two combine in some way.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Since "ställ" can refer to a dress I'm going with "ställstället" being a "dress-rack/stand" (what's the English term for it?) rather than a stand-ception.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Either dressrack or dressstand sounds good enough. Part of English's problem is that it's too much like Swedish here to know easily without spartan training :P
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Gaah, I forgot there was an "i" preceding the "stället" before "ställstället"!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner ok, "i" means also in... maybe the first is "stället" in "stället" = ställstället instead?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ok, most neutral translation I can come up with now knowing that a ställställ may be an actual *thing*:

"the stand was adjusted: "Stand in front of the ställ in the ställ - the ställställ - instead" was the attitude produced confusingly"
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ok, from what I can tell, at best, a ställställ is what some people call a laundry rack?

"The stance was adjusted; "stand in front of the rack in the house (stead) - the laundry rack - instead" was the attitude produced confusingly".
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку The stance was adjusted: "Stand in front of the dress in the rack - the dress-rack - instead" such was the attitude that was presented.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner stand in front of the dress in the rack , the dress -rack, instead?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ställa can mean to confuse someone, sorta. There's no decent way to translate it from what I can see:
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/st%C3%A4lla

The problem is that "ställa" is ultimately about 'standing' in a very general sense (I guess a bit like the word English "string" in terms of flexibility).

(Folkets lexikon confirms that definition btw via ställd)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Mahahaa! The confusion!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström!!!!!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner finally!!!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Benevolent Victor of the last round, got some feedback for us? ;-)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith (And don't worry Victor, just as you made it hard for us, we made sure to make it hard for you to catch up ;-) )
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Yes, I do. :) Half of it is wrong. :)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Mind being a bit more specific? :D
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Which and whose half?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Your better half? Well, I'm not sure, what's your current status? [sic]
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку I came up with this: "The stance was adjusted: "Stand in front of the dress in the rack - the dress-rack - instead" such was the attitude that was presented."

And this is Christian's: "The stance was adjusted; "stand in front of the rack in the house (stead) - the laundry rack - instead" was the attitude produced confusingly"."
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I like "dress-rack", "instead", "attitude" and "presented". :P
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Fram = in front of is wrong?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith So: "The (ställ) was (ställdes in); "(Ställ)( in front of?) the (ställ) in front of the rack - the dressrack - instead" was the attitude presented (ställt)".

>

"The opinion was changed; "Put the dress there on the rack - the dressrack - instead" was the attitude presented as put forth.

Sounds like a couple rearranging a room.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Maria Weidner
http://folkets-lexikon.csc.kth.se/folkets/#lookup&fram&0
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Ok.... i missunderstood the German translation
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Die Wohnung wurde eingerichtet!!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Oh, put it together Maria!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Where did you find "there", Christian? ;)

And another question... Does "ställ" have to mean "dress-like clothes" or "rack"...?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner The house was Bering arranged (?)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Bering= being
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith "there" was from Folkets Lexikon, but I can't think of a decent way to put "fram" in the sentence in English without it sounding retarded.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Sorry, no houses or flats. I might accept it then, Christian! :P
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner The house was being arranged (?), put the dress in the rack, the dress rack instead
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Ok...
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Well, if those two ställets aren't for those two, one could be from ställe (in the place? IDK)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I am the one who translates, the putting together is someone else's task! ;) but this time I even fail at (?) Translation...
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Honestly, I can't find many definitions for ställ at all, although I think "gear" could be a possible third one.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith "The position (location?) was adjusted; "Put the gear there on the rack - the dress-rack - instead", was the attitude presented as put forth".
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith DARL, PUT YA CRAP ON THE CLOVES RACK INSTEAD, KAY?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Okay, that's better, now keep going at the other things that I didn't say were OK. :P
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith So position, and possibly "put forth" and "adjusted" need work then I guess... Hmmm...
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Ställa, ställina, la notte si avvicina.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку "Put the dress in front of the rack - the dress-rack - instead"?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner wait, but ställ fram is not "framställa" ? but "ställa fram" (two different words?
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку "Ställ fram" is something like "to put in front of", while "framställa" is "to produce, to present, to describe".
They're clearly related, because if you put something in front of someone you are presenting it to them.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Original:
"Ställningen ställdes in; "Ställ fram stället i stället - ställstället - i stället" framställdes inställningen ställt."
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner tha's why Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Note: Fram is not a preposition, from what I can tell.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner so could it be from framställa?
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven 'tis an adverb, good sir
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner describe the garment in the rack?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Why hi, fellow kålrot! :P
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Thus I guess a strict translation would be "put forward the gear on the rack". Not "put in front of the gear on the rack". I think this is also a transitive verb, ställa, that is.

Thus why I wrote what I did:
"The position (location?) was adjusted; "Put the gear there on the rack - the dress-rack - instead", was the attitude presented as put forth".
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку This dress-rack-adjusting nonsense is clearly the revenge of some IKEA worker.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку The position was adjusted/set up; "put the dresses/gear/paraphernalia on the rack - the dress-rack - instead" the attitude (read: the aforementioned position) was presented as such.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline If I may have a go halfway into this game.... :)

Ställningen ställdes in [The position was adjusted.]

"Ställ fram stället i stället - ställstället - i stället" framställdes inställningen ställt." ["Place the rack in position - the ... - instead." The approach was presented confused.]
---
Hm... I'm doubtful and confused :)
Fire the IKEA-translator!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Then there is the question: Is "ställning" really meant to be "position"..? :)

Lets put it like this; Sarah did some progress by being confused.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Hm... Ställningen ställdes in:
The setting/location/was set/installed.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith "The confusion was set in motion; "Put the gear there on the rack - the dress-rack - instead", was the attitude presented (as stated?)"
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström No. Those last brackets are confusing, so to speak. :P
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ah, nevermind
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith "The mood changed; "Put the gear there on the rack - the dress-rack - instead", was the attitude confusingly presented"?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Well, at least it's not "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo", still.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I guess using a dictionary is prohibeted, as is bribing a native speaker? :) :)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Dictionaries *aren't* prohibited. Google translate is though.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Bribing native speakers, well, we haven't had precedent on that yet ;-)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I would question Google's "translating" skills anyway. I imagine they would tell us it means "the sun is out, and the sky is blue. If you're confused, send 1000 SK to Bengt, a dress-rack maker, in Umeå" :)
I'm opening a Paypal account...Viktor, Billy, Malin... Just so you know!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Haha, well, normally it's not so confusing. But also, occasionally with set phrases, Google translate can do a good job (because it's been "read" by the spider bot or whatever it's called that goes over all the information on the net).
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I've seen some bad translations, particularly of German and Serbian technical documents. So many words are entered that weren't in the original...

Before I was confused, now I'm confounded! :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline A mini glossary:
Stället: The rack Ställe: The place/position [Definite noun]
Ställa in: to put/to adjust [Phrasal verb]
Ställa fram: To set / to adjust [Phrasal verb]
Framställa: to describe, present / to produce, to manufacture [Non separable]
Inställa: To stop/cancel/discontinue [Non separable]
Inställningen: The position/setting/set/location [Definite noun]
I stället: Instead
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner You are too stupid to adjust the IKEA rack, I changed my mind, take it back!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "You've not been victorious in adjusting this Ikea "Skärström"-rack well. Please re-learn this lovely Swedish language!" :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Die Stellung ist eingestellt - stell die Klamotten lieber ins Gestell - Klamottengestell, die Einstellung wurde vorgestellt...stellt.... ????? muhahaha
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Ja, das klingt mir sehr gut! hahaha
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I am not quite sure yet what we've guessed right and what is still completely wrong...
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Nnnno, Maria... ;) Well, me neither, actually. .P What's the current guess?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I don't think "position" was right.

My current guess:
The setting was adjusted/positioned.
Place the rack in position - .
the ?- instead.
The attitude/approach (?) was ? with confusion.
----
@Viktor: Does this definitely, without a doubt, make sense in Swedish?! hahaha
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner This was the last guess from Christian James Meredith: The position (location?) was adjusted; "Put the gear there on the rack - the dress-rack - instead", was the attitude presented as put forth".
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline One thing that's confusing me is if all or any of the Swedish text is direct speech. If it were, that would account for the position of "framstäldes"
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Yes,there is I think. the : "Ställ fram stället i stället - ställstället - i stället" should be direct speech
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Thank you! So I guess that is what "framställdes inställningen ställt" (was presented confused) refers to.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner yes, exactly. But Victor isn't content yet...
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Well, no, that just meant that you figured out "how" to say it. :P Not "what" it says! ^^
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I have aproblem with "ställt" it should come with an auxiliar verb, but there is none..
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Victor could you please tell us exactly what's wrong and what not? PLEASE! :)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Well, in Swedish the perfect auxiliary may be omitted. In this case, however, it's not even a verb. :P
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "Ställt", I think, is an adverb (or adjective: Ställd, Ställt, Ställda - Neuter form is "ställt".)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner AH, this helps (I guess)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline It would make sense to me to omit "inställningen", so this way the last clause would refer directly to the quoted text.
But it's not, soooo it goes with the verb "framställdes".
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Hmm. I only find it as a verb... is it a participle as an adjective? (like in "screaming" child?)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström No, it's an adverbialised adjective derived from a past participle, that has undergone a semantical shift. :P
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Han är ställd av någonting- > He was confused by something.
Han har ställt en fråga - > He asked a question.
Han frågar ställt... He asked confusingly...
---
Possibly..
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner ok, that's more or less what I meant. past participle is good, that helps.. i hope
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Sarah, yes, it has many meanings depending on the context
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Victor, but the "put the gear in the dress rack" thing is right?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner oh, semantical shift is not good..
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Actually, I'd prefer "set" to "gear". :) Otherwise, yeah.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner put the set in the dress rack?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner and has ställt really something do do with "confusion" ?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Yup. :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner good
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Sarah figured that out earlier. :P
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline ", framställdes inställningen ställt." ->
The approach was described/presented confusingly.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner the problem is now "framställdes"?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner wait, didnt you say before Victor that you agree with "attitude"? inställningen = attitude?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner The attitude was ...... confusingly?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Finally! My day off, and just woke up, let this fresh brain bring some new ideas

Ställningen ställdes in; "Ställ fram stället i stället - ställstället - i stället" framställdes inställningen ställt

hmmm....
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Selamat pagi! :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter lol, is it too obvious that I'm Indo, lol
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Victor : The attitude was ...... confusingly?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I recognize Indonesians every- and anywhere! :p
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Well, Sarah said it earlier. ^^ Can't guidecha through it!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Sarah said so much... but she said approach, so is it right , too?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström It means "present" :P
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Yes, that was also one of my first guesses this morning, but the attitude was presented seemed strange...
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner But maybe it's again my limited English which hinders me...
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner ..... put the set in the rack - the dress rack- the attitude/ approach was presented confusingly.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter the attitude was made confusingly?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner But something was cancelled?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Another attempt: "The attitude/approach was presented confusingly." - > The given attitude/approach was confusing ("given" = formal speech for "presented"
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Let me summarise your hard work:

Ställningen____ : a stand
ställdes in_____: was cancelled/ was adjusted
Ställ_________ : adjust/ set
fram_________: forward
stället i stället -
ställstället_____: the dress rack
i stället_______: instead
framställdes___: was made
inställningen___: the position
ställt_________: confusing
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter if ( i stället ) means instead, does ( stället i stället ) contains the meaning of instead??
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline This is my glossary which I posted earlier:

mini glossary:
Ställa in: to put/to adjust [Phrasal verb]
Ställa fram: To set / to adjust [Phrasal verb]
Framställa: to describe, present / to produce, to manufacture [Non separable]

Inställa: To stop/cancel/discontinue [Non separable]
Inställningen: The position/setting/set/location [Definite noun]
I stället: Instead / in position
Ställa någonting i någonting: Put something in something.

Ställning: Position/ Stand
Ställd/Ställt/Ställda: Adjective/Adverb: Confused/Confusing
Stället: The rack / The place/position [Definite noun]
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Sarah Karoline according to my sources, "ställa in" means "to cancel" although Im not quite sure how accurate it is...
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter oh, it has got 2 meanings:
http://www.swedish-flashcards.com/translate-4330
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I'm using "Norstedts Store Svensk-Engelska ordbok" and Lexin Svenskt-Engelskt lexikon".
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter well in this context, I guess "to adjust" seems to make more sense rather than "to cancel", so let's go with "to adjust" then...
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline http://tyda.se/ ({Swedish, German, English)
Ställa in:
Norstedts has: to put in/enter, adjust/set, acommodate.
-Ställ in något i något. Put something in something
-Ställ in radion på en annan kanal. Tune the radio to another channel.

Lexin has: adjust, cancel
Tyda has: tune, cancel
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I am still confused with "stället i stället"
does it mean:
1. dress in the stand
or
2. stand instead
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline My guess is:
"ställ fram" = "put" or "set"
"stället" = the rack
"i stället" = in position.

"i stället" means "in position" and "instead"

I can't find "ställstället", so I'm guessing Victor has made it up! :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter mama mia!

The stand was adjusted ; "Put the rack in the position - the dress rack - instead" the position was made confusing.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Ställningen ställdes in; "Ställ fram stället i stället - ställstället - i stället" framställdes inställningen ställt

and if I have to polish it and add my personal interpretation and improvisation:

The stand was adjusted ; "Put the rack in the place - the dress rack - instead" the explanation was made confusing
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I changed my profile pic into something with bright colour, so when I am scrolling around sprogspelet thread, I can quickly see/search my post :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Victor already said that: put the set in the rack - the dress rack - is right
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Sarah, ställstället is dress rack, we've got this already :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Maria: I hadn't seen that post. Thank you!

I wish I could find "ställstället" in a dictionary and I'm wondering what "set" is - TV set. Cutlery set. Set of something...
Just call me picky! hihihi
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner We said gear before, but Victor liked "set" better, what set - no idea! :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner It is a compound noun, so you'll find it nowhere :)
Дайте Нефть Из Баку

Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner hmm..not really, in german we can do this too, they are not made up, just.... compound! :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I should have better expressed that as "made-up on the spur of the moment", rather than not real.
German and Swedish compounding is fun!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter like bedienungsanleitung maybe?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Дайте Нефть Из Баку: Add tiramisu to that bribe and we may have the answer to our question in seconds! haha

Sarah, I'm probably one of the few people in the world that don't like tiramisu. Waaay too sweet.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner yes, Victor confirmed that
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner put the set in the dress rack was confirmed by Victor
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Daite, this far what I have got is:

The stand was adjusted ; "Put the set in the rack - the dress rack - instead" the position was made confusing.

based on the hard work that Arief, Maria, Sarah and others have contributed
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Ställningen ställdes in; "Ställ fram stället i stället - ställstället - i stället" framställdes inställningen ställt.

The stand (meaning "exposition"?) was adjusted; "Put the set on the rack - the dress-rack - instead" [framställdes] [inställningen] [ställt].

Korrekt?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner framställdes: attitude/approach..?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter The stand was adjusted ; "Put the set in the rack - the dress rack - instead" the approach was made confusing.

sounds better :)
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Inställningen = the attitude/approach
Framställdes = past passive of framställa = to present, to produce.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Sarah said :the approach was presented confusingly and it seems that Victor was ok with it
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "Inställning" means both "attitude" and "approach" according to Lexin and Norstedt dictionaries.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner "The stand was adjusted " Put the set in the rack -the dress rack"- the approach was presented confusingly"
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I wrote this post a few minutes ago, but it seems to have gone awol.

Ställstället: I'm wondering how "ställ-" from "ställa" (to put/position) can undergo a semantic shift and represent "dress-" in "ställstället".

This is the reason I'm wondering if it's "dress rack".

"Klädd-" usually represents "dress-" in compounds.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Hmmmm... this morning (in Europe) the guys found out that "ställ" can mean "dress, clothes, garment", how and why? ask them! :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner But it is dress rack, Victor confirmed it various times :)
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Both tyda.se and wiktionary list "ställ" as "dress/outfit", although not the Folkets Lexikon.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Maybe it has come to mean "dress" through metonymy? Ställ (dress) through ställ (rack, wardrobe), which in turn came from ställa (to stand)?
(I'm kind of making things up here.)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström "Ställ" doesn't really mean "dress". :P However, there is no real equivalent in English. Actually, it's more similar to an "over-all" or a "jumpsuit". I don't expect you to find the precise term, so "dress" is fine.

The point is that a "ställ" is a type of clothing that covers big parts of the body, which you step into; stand in.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Tyda: "Ställ" = "outfit" (gear - DE. Klamott), "unit".
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Ställ - Outfit? Clothes rack. ?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Clothes rack is just fine. :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Could "ställ" by itself (out of context with this text) be "outfit", "all-in-one", "boiler suit"?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Well, it's very specific, and "outfit" means "utstyrsel". But yes, "all-in-one" and especially "boiler suit" are good examples of "ställ". :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Thank you!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström De rien. :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner That's what I put together from what the others found out: "The stand was adjusted " Put the set in the rack -the dress rack"- the approach was presented confusingly" Could you tell us what is still wrong? Victor

Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner wow, this was confusing!!!!!!

Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Version 5148:

The stand was put inside/positioned inside. "Put the unit/set into the stand - the clothes rack - instead".

The approach was confusingly presented.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку But "ställa" is to put something vertically not inside something.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку (By the way, for future reference just call me Davide or David. "Dajte" feels weird since it's a verb.)

Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Please, let it be right, please!!!!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Victor, stop eating french fries and tell us that Sarah is right!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Дайте Нефть Из Баку yeah I agree, that's why I say inserted.
when you assembly a rack you need to insert the long pole into the slot in the base to ensure the rack itself will stand straight.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Oh, wait. Here we have "ställdes in". So the freaking stand was put vertically inside something. I'd use either a Russian verb of motion or "to be placed/to be in place".
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Snälla, snälla...
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку The stand was inserted/placed.
"Put the set into the stand - the dress rack - instead."
The approach was confusingly presented.

Victor! Responde nobis, suione!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter we got a long pole to be used as the stand, the base to be put in the floor, and a set to be slotted in the stand (pole) later on. The result is a dress rack!!!

So:
The stand was inserted ( to the base ); "put/attach the set into the stand- the dress rack - instead (so now it's not a bunch of metal anymore, but a dress rack instead)" The approach was presented/made confusingly
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Well, while you wait on the Lord of the Fries, you could always learn some new Swedish vocabulary from looking at my sentence.

"Den grubblande grabben Gunfrids grisigt glada gris gottar sig gott i grisastugan Grönskogas grumsiga älvs grunda gyttjegöl."

It's a comparatively easy sentence.

grisigt glada < a crappy pun! You are right in that "grisigt" usually means "filthy, messy" but I was ad-hoc using it as "piggily" here – "piggily happy", which as we're talking about a pig can be interpreted as "(,,.)'s pig, happy as a pig (could be)." xD

Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström At that; remember that due to the passive, both direct and indirect speech is involved. :P
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку So what's wrong with the last translation?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner So, what about Arief Wibowo's and Vincensiu Denis's translations?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner And Sarah's?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Okay... Could you please repost them? :P
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström You people talk to much inbetween. :/
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter mine:
we got a long pole to be used as the stand, the base to be put in the floor, and a set to be slotted in the stand (pole) later on. The result is a dress rack!!!

So:
The stand was inserted ( to the base ); "put/attach the set into the stand- the dress rack - instead (so now it's not a bunch of metal anymore, but a dress rack instead)" The approach was presented/made confusingly

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Davide's :

Victor! Responde nobis, suione!

Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Version 5149:

"The rack was put inside. "Put the set into the rack - the clothes rack - instead." The approach was confusingly presented.
(Edited countless times)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström You know what, the ambiguity of the possible translation, both in English and Swedish, gives me no choice:

Sarah, you are the winner of this round. IF you can point out which rack the first rack refers to!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Hm... The problem is the ambiguity of the translation of the word "rack". In English it has soooo many translations....

Were I to win, I would feel a bit guilty, as I only started a few hours ago....

Without an image of whatever is being built, the description of "rack" could be endless...
:)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Okay, anyone, which rack refers to which rack? Use numbers. :P
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline At a guess... Rack 1 was put into rack 2 (the clothes rack).
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström An the full phrase? ^^
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter The rack1 was put inside. "Put the set into the rack - the clothes rack - instead (not the rack 1)." The approach was confusingly presented
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Guesswork: The rack (1) was put inside. "Put the rack (1)into the rack (2)- the clothes rack (2)- instead." The approach was confusingly presented.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner And now he disappeared again...
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Now it's set instead of rack all the sudden. :/
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I think set = rack1
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I've just changed "set" for "rack" and I racked my brain in the process : )
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку If rack 1 works as a stand rack 2 is to be put on it, isn't it?

... I can't help but laugh at all this.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Sarah Karoline is my winner!

The rack (1) was put inside. "Put the rack (1)into the rack (2)- the clothes rack (2)- instead." The approach was confusingly presented.

:) Please note that the original Swedish nuances of "racks" were a bit lost.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter OK, I gave up, going to do some shopping, cook some meal then go to bed. Hopefully by the time I wake up we already got a champion
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline And all our little neurones have been wrecked through having been racked about Swedish racks... :)
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку I demand visual instructions!
No, seriously, I want to see the sodding thing now.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Why can't I see the comments anymore? I get them as email, but here I don't see them..strange..
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Yes, I too am intrigued what we've been describing. Have we been helping Ikea out or was this perhaps a translation of Bang & Olufsen? Perhaps the translation is for Victor's furniture stall?

Maria Weider: I only got notifications too. I had to log out about ten minutes ago, wait a bit and then log back in before I saw the new messages.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline If I've won, I guess it's my turn to think of a phrase..
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Wow, the last one from Sarah Karoline I can see again!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Yes, Sarah, your turn! But don't confuse us as a certain Viking did!!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner jumpsuit, set.. nothing but lies! .P
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I will be fair and offer you all a choice: transcription in IPA or no IPA... it's dialectal!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Should we start a new thread? This could eliminate the notification errors we're having?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Yes, That's agood idea, I can't see the comments again..
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Oh good that it is over now...
Yeah I guess we better start a new thread.
If I can bring an input, I prefer no IPA though...
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I think it was "Ställ" - > Boilersuit. Ställstället -> clothes rack.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Congrats to you Sarah!! :D
Plz tag me when the new thread started. Im on my galaxy so it's a bit difficult to search for thread here...

Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Sarah Karoline, don't worry about proper formatting for new the new thread/post, it generally should contain:
* Thread number (yours will be sixth/VI)
* a link to the main page of our website (http://sprogspelet.arwi.im/)
* acknowledgement to Malin Elisabeth Nilsson the progenitor

You may be as creative as you want in wording it :)

That page will show the current round, almost live (about 30 seconds delay), sans Facebook problems.

You still need to use Facebook to send your reply though... Perhaps in the far future you can play directly from the website :)

Disclaimer: I only spend 3 hours to develop that page, expect errors :P
Tell me if you experience any errors :)

Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Yes. For 1 bazillion french dollars
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Hm... can I pay in cookies instead? I lost 10000sk bribing a Viking during yesterday's round.
Victor : I'd like to see an image of this rack thing we described! :)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Or about 1 septillion zimbabwean dollars
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith If a Swede (or on the off chance an Icelander) can imagine it, Ikea's probably got it.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Sarah Karoline, here's how you build yesterday's rack: http://j.mp/17VrBpF
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I, on behalf of Språkspelet's/Sprogspelet's/*Málspíl's 26 currently-active Språkspelers/Sprogspelers/Málleikuri, welcome y'all to the 6th season of this great game!

* The Icelandic term...any misspelling let me know
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку So Victor's round did bring the world to an end after all.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Imagine, Swedish is more difficult than Quechua!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline So, the Viking Flag has been carried by Yngie Malmsteen through the Land of The Midnight Sun, across the Sound and Denmark and across the choppy waters to an Isolated Island where here lexical remnants of the Vikings have been mixed with a regional dialect to form a nice gruel. The following post is the result of one such phrase, and this is the challengel

Sarah Karoline I'm still having technical problems... Tagging people isn't going too well!
