Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Round 169:
Nie dajmy się nabrać. Upadkom można zapobiegać!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Hello Vincensiu [I've had limited internet access as I've been camping out in the Nordic wilderness for two weeks. Countryside really should have generators for us hikers... :) ]
I have a few minutes internet access before my bus goes, so I shall offer a few translated words:
Nie: don't. Mozna: can. Się: oneself (reflexive pronoun). Daj się: give oneself/let oneself/allow oneself (?)
---
My bus is here, so I shall have to go. I shall return this evening si possibile.
Det leve att stjälcuri!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline For the moderators: Mikkel Christian :)

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter This thread is undoubtly the most difficult thread ever!!
Excluding my Slovakian round, the rest are ultra difficult...
Lepcha, Pashto, Nanchowry & Poetic Japanese,
OMG.... Mama mia, Papa pia, Dios mio!
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson This round seems to be Polish
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson Dont allow (your?)self to (give up?). (Patience?) can (triumph?)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter everything in the brackets are still incorrect, except "your".
I need to go somewhere, brb
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson K
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson Don't allow youself to (nabrać). (Upadkom) can (zapobiegać)
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson From what I can tell, both nabra´c and zapobiega´c are verbs, since wiki. says that polish verbs end in ´c
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Just a hunch, but I don't think dajmy is 2nd person singular. If Polish conjugation is like Czech (-me), it should be 1st person plural.
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson And they appear to be in the infinitive
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson But Vincensiu said it is 2nd person
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson I think upadkom is in the Dative Plural
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Where did he say that it was 2nd person singular? I don't see the post :/. According to every conjugation site I've seen so far, dajmy is the first person plural imperative of dać, but I can't attest it.
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson "Everything in the brackets is still incorrect, except 'your'"
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres I only see the post where I am tagged, and the original quote :/. If I can't see all the posts made by the round host, it'll be very difficult for me to participate :(
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson Refresh?
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson "The dative is used for indirect objects, to denote the party for whom something is done or the "party concerned" in certain expressions (such as wolno mu, "he is allowed", lit. "it is allowed to him"), and as the object of some verbs and prepositions." - Wiki.
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson I think the usage of Upadk is along the lines of "It is possible for (Upadk) to (Zapobeigac)"
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Weird, I'd refreshed several times, but only the last time revealed the post! Wordreference's Polish dictionary gives dać się nabrać as a set phrase: to be tricked. If cognate with Czech se, się could be the marker of a reciprocal or reflexive verb. So: don't be tricked/don't fool yourself?
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson Don't allow yourself to be tricked!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I'm back.
Andy Ayres it happens sometimes, in the past it happened to me and I couldn't read CJM's post. You can refer to our website, either in the live page or round page.

Oh and yes, Vincensiu Dionisiu is a human, so he makes mistakes.
I checked it, and it should be first person plural.

Mikkel you are in the right track :)
I don't really like "tricked" though
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson I checked the word Zapobeigac on the Polish Wikt., and it said that it means the same thing as the Arabic منع, which I looked up on the English Wikt., which means to prevent or prohibit
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson Don't let us be scammed. Their trickery can be prevented.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter nope, Andy was NSIH for the first part.
Or should I say he was correct had I provided a correct information early (regarding to "your")
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson Don't fool us. Your trickery can be prevented
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter u r going further away :S
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson Oh bugger
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson We won't be fooled (Lit. We won't fool ourselves). Your trickery can be prevented
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Vincensiu - What an odd defect - I'll definitely follow it with the site instead in future :). It's amazing the number of bugs FB has sometimes - you'd think they'd have ironed them out by now. I'm glad that the little I learnt about conjugation in West Slavic. What's NSIH by the way?

Don't allow ourselves to be fooled sounds a bit clunky - more idiomatic would be "let's not be fooled." I put "upadkom + wiktionary" into google and it says that it's the dative plural of "fall (loss of greatness or status)". No luck with zapobiegać so far though - will have to try some other dictionaries.

So as an attempt: "let's not be fooled/let's not fool ourselves, falls can [zapobiegać]"
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Mikkel already got zapobiegać.
So it's now all about stjallcuri and whoever summarise it first :)
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Aha! Didn't notice that!

A try: "let's not be fooled/let's not fool ourselves, falls can be prevented."
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Andy, you won!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter SO what will be our next round Andy?
