Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter tag boot help:
Zeke Edmund
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Okay. It's definitely Scandinavian! I hear 'sverige' and 'språk'
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong sounds Tonal.
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia Norwegian?
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson 99% sure it's Swedish
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia It has some tongue twister patterns, but I can't be sure ^^
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner It sounds beautiful! But it reminds me somehow of "ställa"..so many repetitions... :/
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I shall have to be quiet as I understand a large amount of it :) [For the first time ever I cannot take part in Victor's round.. shock/horror and :( ]
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I understood one word: language
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson I understood one word: "Sverige"
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström It is indeed Swedish, it is me speaking a very proper idiolect. :)
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia I think I'm thinking of Norwegian because yesterday I watched Trolljägeren againg ^^
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström My dialect is Western Swedish, so I understand if people get Norwegian "vibes". :P
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson I don't understand any of it now, but once we get a transcription, I'll probably get it quite quickly
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua I understand something at the end like this...

"Sverige inte er sverige och te språk for skongen er gongen. Lycka till!"

Bear in mind I do not speak Swedish, so I'm just basing myself on my instinct.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Well, there's a "Sverige" in there, and "och" and "språk". :P
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua And the Lycka till in the end, I'm sure it's Lycka till!!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström It is Lycka till! :O
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson Is "Lycka til" at all related to "tilykke"?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Okay...I hear...

"anden från anden från" [0.06 - 0.08]
"i rum" [0.17]
"hör" [0.28]
"är bäst" [0.33]
"Sverige inte är Sverige och de språk .... gången" [0.43 - 0.46]
"Lycka till!" [0.49]
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Sarah are you sure you understand most of it?
It's Victor's round anyway :P

I heard:
Thank you for your nominate quick, Ok man here.....
Birgit Willigar
Birgit Willigar Yes, i also recognized it as swedish.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Dago:
1. Yup.
2. Consider [rum], where [ ] means that you will have to check the pronunciation.
3. Nope. Consider [bäst]. A lot.
4. The second Sverige, inte, och, and språk are correct.
5. Yup.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Sarah, you have my authorisation to help out a bit! A bit, that is. :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Is the first two words:
Tänk nu?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Indeed!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I think Andy and Christian could be of value around here!
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent Tänk nu ... is that "Thank you"???
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Haha, if it were...! Nope, sorry! ^^
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent Tank nu for your nominen??
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Okay, so what I have is... {What's between brackets is how -I- would write what I'm hearing, but it's definitely not proper Swedish, what's outside the brackets is what I think is correct}

Normannen jer to vrum u rom san vrummer i roum.] Min norm [es prysdte prysdte, u jouden judhe jüden juht neer e jupsson].

I'm starting to see a pattern of words and expressions that tell me that the message actually says something related to the game. Like "remember this things... do this, do that, hear well, etc. The rule is that you must... Train, train and then.... Swedes .... Sweden and their language..... times. Good luck!"

I hope you like my fake Swedish orthography, I find it kind of nice, hahahaha.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I think it is
Tänk nu på jeg nominen (skjuist).....
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Adrian
Tänk = think/ remember (imperative)
nu = now
på = in/at
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström The beginning is indeed a reminder for you guys...! You are making some progress, the start is:

"Tänk nu på..."
You're feeling well, Victor? I didn't expect something so... merciful from you.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Did I mention Swedish is tonal?
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Normanniniere to(h) room or rum som reumer e rum. Van norman spaceda brijeste ov vuiden jude judern, juikt nire e jusum. Traene traerne ( ) run tanne huir.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Yeah David, I was expecting some sacred language spoken by ancient tribe from Inca empire or a tribal language spoken by 2,000 people deep in African jungle
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent That is my wild guess as to the "sounds", up to about half way. My ears are straining.....
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Either that or Swedish.

I think the difficulty of this round remains hidden.
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent How many tones?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Pitch accent. :P
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Hidden? I think I already saw it :p
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent Dammit... four years studying linguistics, you might think I would know what a "pitch accent" is. All I can think of is teh way people speak on a cricket pitch????
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Glad you think so, Victor :). I have to get marking my students' essays out of the way - meant to do it yesterday, but was kept in hospital for too long - but then I'll give it a stab. It took me just over twelve hours to get a dozen words yesterday because of my quite considerable deafness, but I look forward to seeing what I can do :)
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent I just wikipedia-ed it: that sounds like EASY tonal, compared to something like Chinese.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström True. :)
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent does this mean that the bit I have transcribed above as "vuiden jude judern" is intentionally three similar SOUNDING words, differentiated by their toes?
Normannen gör to vrom och rom (Rom?) san vrummer i Rom.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Yes. Their toes.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Дайте, as I amn't entirely clear on how proficient you are in Swedish...! How far have come in your studies? :)
That basically sums up my oral proficiency.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström It sounds like someone is keeping you in their cellar somewhere! :S

Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline .... och tryck på "inte tillämplig!"
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Sarah Can you recommend any good Swedish dictionary
old style one with alphabetical order preferred.
I need some help in identifying the sje-sounds
I still can't find the proper way to transcript the "skjulier" sounds
That was me trying to order some food during my first day in Stockholm, by the way.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I'll join in now, too :) I just finished listening to the audio, and I think I know the trick Victor is talking about. :P

Vincensiu, the "sj" words at the beginning I think are "skis" and "skiljer".
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Några ordböcker ~ Some dictionaries:

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Welcome back & Thank you Anna.
Back to civilisation with internet access now? :p
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I've been back for a while, but swamped with work, so I'm going to attempt multitasking :P
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Not "skis", unfortunately!
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I've still been trying to work on that. Closest I've actually gotten is "skiss", but I'm not sure that makes sense in the context of the sentence D:
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Sorry guys! I left for some time because I had to make lunch!... Any progress so far?

Has anyone identified proper Swedish from my poor attempt at writing it?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I'll give you that word; it's "skiljs". :)
Anna Robbins
"Think now of the name chosen by the name"?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua I would say it goes... "Remember this, that the names are separated by the names"
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins But "remember this" is "minns det".
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Vincensiu said it could work as 'remember this', like a suggestion.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins And good catch; that was supposed to be plural, "the names" :P
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent Think on this. Consider this. Contemplate this....?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter tänk nu = remember now/ remember this??
Anyway I'm sure that we are in the right track or at least our transcription is near correct.

shall we proceed with the transcription:
och in man skiljer....
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua I say the first part goes...

Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Something tells me the last 'anden' is different, but I'm not sure how.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins If we take that as an expression, it would be "tänk nu på" altogether, I'd think.

Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent so many of these words sound so similar to German, that I keep guessing.... and I am fairly sure I am guessing wrong. anden - others???
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua The dictionaries tell me 'ande' is related to 'spirit',
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent o.k...... I will completely stop taking guesses now.
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent What feedback do we have on the transcription(s) provided so far???
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua MY OFFICIAL GUESS FOR THE FIRST PART:

Tänk nu på den namnen skiljs på namnen, och en man skiljer anden från anden från andan.

Consider this, that the names are separated by the names, and a man distinguishes one from another from another one.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Ignore that last comment of mine; I messed up :P I'm confused. Victor, vad tycker du?
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent I'm going to bed. Again, just when it gets interesting.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter So Adrian, your guess is still near correct :)

Dago maybe the last "another one" is "the rest" ??
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent How much difference to meaning do the tones make?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I deleted that comment, because I'm pretty sure I probably translated that wrong.

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter in the [...] part I heard /ju/ sounds
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I still don't know exactly what comes between "och" and "skiljer".
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Funny, because that is the same word as [...]...!
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua What about my guess, Victor? :p
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Good to know, that I'm a pro at identifying unidentified words :P

Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Still have no idea what the [...] is xD But I'll hazard a guess at the next line.

"Litet skiljer pärser från pärser, och andra katter."

Not sure about "pärser", and REALLY not sure about "och andra katter".
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Almost correct! :P
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Look, I've collected all the info we have so far. Between brackets, the unknown words and the things that have been proposed to fill the gap.... What's outside the brackets, is supposedly correct.

-----------------------------------------------

[¿Normannen?] [¿jer/ere/gör?] [¿to(h)?] [¿room/vrum/vrom?] [¿or/u/och?] [¿rom/rom/rum?] [¿san/som?] [¿vrummer/reumer?] [¿e/i?] [¿roum/rum/Rom?].

[¿Min/Van?] [¿norm/norman?] [¿es prysdte/spaceda?] [¿brijeste/prysdte?], [¿u/ov?] [¿jouden/vuiden?] [¿judhe/jude?] [¿jüden/judern?], [¿juht/juikt?] [¿neer/nire?] e [¿jusum/jupsson?].

Träna, träna, [¿run/und?] [¿den är/tanne?] [¿huir/hör?] [¿sjenöhjusssa?].

[¿Sleckten?] [¿Sleckten?]

Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Oh, I can add clarification to some of those :)
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent although,my comment about guessing from German similarities... absent could also mean "making different." or"changing".
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua That's why I put it out Anna.... To people who do know a bit more of Swedish! I'm just going on instinct right now, and a great Swedish dictionary.

I just noticed it sounds so pretty I should learn and speak it.
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent so maybe: skills change from one to another. OR "skills are different from one to another"
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Unfortunately not. :(
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Wait.... I've been meaning to ask this since the start. Is it possible that Swedish has a word related to the Italian 'pagliaccio'? I keep hearing something like it towards the last phrases.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Oh you pagliacci..!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Nordmän/Når man förhyra to rum ur??
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Eeeuhm, nope! :S
Anna Robbins

[¿to(h)?] [¿room/vrum/vrom?] [¿or/u/och?] [¿rom/rom/rum?] som [¿vrummer/reumerromer?] i Rom.

Men Norrmans [¿es prysdte/spaceda/beste/bäste?] [¿brijeste/prysdte/brister?], och ljuden gjorde ljuden gjutninger i ljusen. (I am almost positive I got this part spelt correctly, but it's a bit convoluted still)

(But "sappat" isn't a word, I don't think, so I really have no idea. Might be sabbat?)

Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström You're getting closer! :)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Who's getting closer?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins And I just edited my comment, because it decided to not post the whole thing :P
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström You, madame!
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Dago, is the word you're hearing, "pajas"?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua I do.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Whoops, I forgot to put my guess in, for that line. I'll edit my comment.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Norrmannen/Nordmän/ Når man är to rum mur råm som rummer i rum??
Does that even make sense??
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Apparently, I did put it there. It just got separated from the rest, because that was the part that decided not to post the first time through :P It's a bit neater now, and with commentary :D
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua I don't see your edited comment :(
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins In that case, I'll just put the whole thing here again. Hopefully you can see it this time!

Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua I like it. It makes sense... Specially the last phrase! Gotta go, be back in a few hours... Lycka till!
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Essay marking and correcting out of the way, now let's join in the fun :)

Tänk nu på HUR?
och andra KÄTTOR ?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Anna for the Norrmannen line, could the second word be: är?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström The [...] has been found! :D
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I honestly thought the second word sounded like "gjörte", but I'm not sure that it's actually a real word :P Maybe "gör det" or something similar.
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres A stab in the dark, but is one of the "pashers" paskär (easters)?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Nope, sorry, Easter is "påsk" ^^
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres And I guess it isn't "parsar" either?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I think your overcomplicating that word. Listen closely to the vowels!
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins something along the lines of "päsker", then? That's how it sounds to me, but I don't think that's a word, either D:
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Now consider the /sh/-sound...! Or just steal it from Andy.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins pärser? I thought that's what I'd put before?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I missed that! :P
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres So, is the pair possible pärser and perser ? :) (not necessarily in that order!)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Clever!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström But... Which is which?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins The first one is more of an "e" than the second...
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström e = ä in short syllables. :P
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Whuch, now that is the question! Pärser från perser? (trials from Persians?)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins What if it actually doesn't matter, which is which?
Litet skiljer 'pärser' från 'perser'.
"Few can distinguish 'trials' from 'Persians'."

What I noticed, when I translated what seemed to be transcribed correctly, is that the entire point of this round is that they're all a play on words :P Basically exploiting the idea that foreigners have a much harder time distinguishing between similar-sounding words in Swedish. ;)
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Most of the words feature the Swedish pitch accent - a way of distinguishing words that would otherwise be pronounced the same and also to madden people like me who can read the language but neither speak or understand it being spoken :p. There are many minimal pairs - in which one word has a so-called acute accent and the other word a grave one... the intonation changes slightly from what I can gather
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Is the next sentence playing on the fact that rum, Rome and Romany are similar?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter yeah, very Victorish :)
In case both of you haven't been told about the stäla...
take a look at round 112
a very historical round, that is
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres I imagine distinguishing which of the pair is which will be crucial to getting the correct translation. Therein lies the evilness of a supposedly benevolent round :p
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Exactly, and they madden me as well :-P I'd suppose it's the same idea as how non-natives have trouble with the Danish stød, which is a different concept but the same idea of minute difference in spoken pronunciation.

I can sort of hazard guesses as to how these words are spelt, because I watch a number of shows in Swedish, but I definitely have some improvement to do :-) I understand how to use the pitch accent on some words, but not on others, and I don't often pick it up while listening. It seems easier to keep track of, when I'm speaking and forced to be conscious of it. And I don't speak Swedish often at all!
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Victor: Rom och Rom… som Romer i Rom?

Anna: Yes, the stød is a profound enemy for those of us who've tried to learn some Danish :p. That and the orthography in general! ;)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline How I wish I could take part... :)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Excellent, now a part of my evil has been revealed...!

Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline May I lie and say I don't know a single word in Swedish? :)
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Men Norrmans brister brister?
But Norwegians' flaws break? *__*
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Almost, but not quite!
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres The transcription or the translation :)? (Or both :o?)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Both. ^^
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter vrist?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Brister is correct. :)
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Men ormens brister brister?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Nope. :/
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres men normens brister brister? :/
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Aha!
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres * V. difficult sentence, got not much of a clue with this one: Träna träna Anderna sjö, sen är ljusa?

* Släkten släkten är värst?

* Men är etter ätter vare? (the order could be the other way around)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Hmm, not quite... :/
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Darn. Got to go out for a while, but before I go - "En pajas har sabbat Sabbat?" (A clown has sabotaged Sabbath?)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I might have made some words up in my transcription for those lines. XD not really sure.
And I've failed at multitasking, so I'll be back later to see how far we've gotten :-)

Also, hör is hear, so it would be har in that case.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I heard: Träna träna run täna sjö
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Oh why you all forsake me??
What shall I do without you?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Maria lagi main ama anak?
bs bantuin gw gk?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Andy got one line yet again!
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Whoops, now that I'm listening again, some of the words are much clearer than I thought. That's what I get for listening to this while half-asleep this morning :P

So, would that line be:

En pajas har sabbat Sabbat, den pajas och tomten på tomten
¤ A clown has sabotaged Sabbath, the clown and elf on the plot ?

Probably got the translation wrong, but I'm assuming one is tomte-n and the other, tomt-en.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Träna träna ron/runt täna sjö?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström The first "träna", "runt" and "sjö" are correct!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Ok... here we go, 1 hour research and this is what I can obtain..
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Really good!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Summary of what we have got this far:
Correct me if I'm wrong folks...

Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins normens, not normans
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter editted...
also the word in "Träna" line, after sjö,
have you got an idea what it could be?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Also, in the last line, I think it's "svärje inte er Sverige".

I had it down as, "sen är ljusa", but it doesn't make much sense. :P
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Anna, that's what I wrote
"svärje inte er Sverige"
exactly match yours... or am I being dyslexic now? :p
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins My bad, I was supposed to change that XD Haha, whoops.
"svärje inte är Sverige" is what I meant to change it to.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Hmmm... but if you look up above, Dago tried " är" but Victor didn't approve it.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I did not.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Oh? Hmm, I missed that.
And sorry, I just found my notes that I'd made earlier. Would it be "över", so that it would read:
"svärje inte över Sverige"? "Don't swear by Sweden"?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Hello! I'm back, and I'm glad to see so much progress.

But I'm even more happy for the fact that what I wrote wasn't really -that- far from the real thing. I should start studying Swedish, haha.

And I wasn't crazy about 'pajas' :p
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres How do, folks. I'm still out, but I'm sneakily availing of a bathroom break to check up on the progress of the game instead of doing it at the table antisocially :p.

* runt ena sjö?

* If gjörte is incorrect, then maybe it is two words gör __?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Good, everyone is here :D
So we can finish this off quickly, and see who will host the next round :D
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I'd suggested "gör det" earlier, but I don't know if that makes any sense, and I can't recall if I'd gotten feedback on it, but I doubt it's correct. It sounds at least like gör/gjör for the first syllable, though, regardless of whether it is one or two words.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Well, why don't we give our host some homework and let him correct my summary :P
then it'll be easier to rule out things and we can work with the translation.
Btw current players are: Moi, Andy, Dago & Anna.
Sarah who would you put your bet on for the future winner? :p
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Anna! Don't swear [...] Sweden!
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I'd naturally assume it's a preposition, such as: by, on, to, for. Still sounds like "över" to me, though.
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Don't swear in sweden!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I'm not familiar with Swedish grammar, but will it make sense if I say
svärje inte för Sverige?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Not:

Norrmannen, släkten (1), hjord, gjord, gjutningar, ljusen, träna (2), ljusa, det, forsgången. :p
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins It's grammatically sensible, yeah. And that would mean, "Don't swear for/before Sweden".
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Wait. That's what's WRONG?!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Över is correct, but by isn't an accurate translation.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins "around", then?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Vincensiu Hm... I'd say you're all in with a good chance att segra! :)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström The English translation isn't exactly literal, and you may have to use some circumlocution. :/
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres A quick attempt at some of the translation:

Now consider how names are separated from namesakes, and how one distinguishes the duck from the ghost from the spirit.

There is little that separates trials from Persians and other cats.

Does the Norwegian make roe and rum, like the Roma in Rome?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Not Norwegian. :p
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins The northerner?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Norrmannen = når man ??
ljusen = gjusen??
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Half right!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström At least ljusen. :p
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter

I'm stuck with the second Träna and [tänä] also if it's not ljusa can it be så..

Geez, I need to have something to eat, my brain used up all my energy
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Not vörs. :/
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins vars?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Nopes! Listen again!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I heard some shhh sounds like fersh :S
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Fars?
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt förgången? Or försgången, but I'm not sure if that's a word, since I don't speak it. xD
I guess I'm trying to ask if it's one word instead of two.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Unfortunately not. :p
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Oh well. xD
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Someone already guessed försgången, and it wasn't correct :P
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter My brain doesn't function very well...
I think I'm going hypoglycaemic now :S
Really gotta go to eat now and the pasta took forever to boil!! Urggghh....!!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I tried to read as much through as I could. Give me a second. c:
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Actually, Helene ninjaed me, but it was wrong, just like "cars". :(
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström *fars
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Först?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Almost!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström The vowel is indeed correct!
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Gotta love the vrum, vrom and such.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Do I sound like that? :p
Billy James Brightraven
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt ...What about just 'förs' then?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Förs it is!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt ..Written this language is much easier to understand. xD
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I believe that was the point Billy tried to make on another post - Swedish pronunciation is essential.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I'd say the same about Danish--I still have problems with understanding it spoken.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Men vent et øjeblik...! Du er ju dansk! Forstår du ikke dine naboer!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I can't understand it sometimes. And that's saying something.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Nej. xD
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt ..Can someone figure out how much has been transcribed properly yet? I'm already confused again.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström *ikke svensk
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Ok, I'm back. Energy replenished.

Helene check our live page, we got a more systematical posts history over there.
If for some reason you can't access the live page, check the round page. We are currently in round 187
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Oh I forgot to say: Welcome to the game :D
Sarah Karoline
Or has my Swedish been effected by the Balko-Norrländsk I hear rather a lot... :0 :0
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I spoke quite properly, I might add. :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Jag håller med........"rrrrrrrrsh rrrrrrrrrrsj rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrsk".
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Did I say that!? :o
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Naa, that was just a joke... :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter

Anna/ Dago/ Andy, proofread SVP.
Justyna Rojek
Justyna Rojek Nord man- Norwegian? Nordmens- Norwegians?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Hmmm... I suggest you check the tones in all the pairs.
Justyna Rojek
Justyna Rojek Actually, I only try to figure sth out from the transcription, as I'm on my mobile and can't play the audio ;)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Träna, [trädna], runt [tänna] sjö [kvinnor] [just så]??
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Mmm... No, not exactly. :p
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Does Swedish have the /ɲ/ sound?

In the Norrmanen/ Nordman line I heard a weak ɲ sounds...
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström It's an allophone of /n/ preceding /j/. :p
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Göta/Götar/Göter? My head has started to make no sense.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström You talking to this göte? ^^
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt ..I confused myself again.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Justyna Rojek, may I know what phone do you use? :)
Does the audio player at http://sprogspelet.arwi.im/help/round-188/ work for you?
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Been trying to make some progress on this for the past while, but my head is spinning trying to work out the few remaining pieces of the puzzle. Unless it's already been solved, will have to come back to this with a fresh head tomorrow!
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Me too... Let's all sleep now :p
Birgit Willigar
Birgit Willigar The scandinavian germanic languages are very interesting! Im just curious, is lithuanian more like a germanic scandinavian language or more like a slavic language?
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven More like a slavic!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith *sigh* Victor what have you done.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Here I am trying to get through 100+ facebook notifications (ignoring a chat that has 1391 unread messages now), and now I'm getting the impression it's a listening comprehension round in Swedish.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Birgit it goes Indo European > Balto-Slavic > Baltic > Lithuanian :)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström You'll all get graded on this, you know.
Justyna Rojek
Justyna Rojek Arief I use Samsung Galaxy. yes, it works! Thank you! :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I'm coming back here hoping I'd be able to see some progress that I can stjalcuri...
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Sorry, I'm physicising! :p
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline The third word is.... [oops, computer is shutting down]
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I'll try ag... [oh!]
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins No progress? D: Vad ska vi göra nu?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Äta semlor?
Sarah Karoline
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I'm busy doing something very important atm :P
while still playing the recording and trying to capture the voice of traena....
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Maybe it's just "trena"?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Hmm... You need some grasp of colloquial Swedish to get that one.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I read that "träna" can either means train/ trees but I don't know which one is which and how to write the other one...
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I thought "trees" was "träden", unless there's another word? Or a colloquial form?
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Am I the only one hearing 'runt denna sjö'?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I thought it was "tenna" coz it sounds like a 't' sounds for me, but you might be right :D
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström The Dane got it! :p
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins The t sound was coming from "runt".... That makes sense now :-D Tillykke Helene :-)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "Runt denna" were the two words I couldn't hear at all :) [Cloth ear Syndrome] Ja, grattis / tillykke Helene
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua So we're all here now?.....

Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Is it just me hearing the sentences being a bit.. Off? I'm just gonna throw this here:
'Sen är ljusen släckta. Släkten är värst men är ätter etter värre?'
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins That's a really good point. I hadn't even considered rearranging.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Victor I'm stuck, and I assume others are too as there hasn't been any progress for the past 2 hours..
Could we get some clues where we can find the answers, please?? :)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins You can find the answers by listening closely, or simply by booking a trip to Sweden. :P
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Let's say that Dago's suggestion is a lot more correct than Helene's. However, Helene has got one word correct; "ljusen".
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I could be standing on Swedish soil in half an hour, but according to Victor, the gibberish they speak over there isn't even Swedish, so I don't know how much that'd help me.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I feel like I don't need to play the recording anymore as my brain is now capable to synthesise Victor's recording and play it inside my brain.
Wait! Is this an early symptom of schizoprenia??
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Answers can be purchased through the donation of semlor....
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Whereto, Helene? ^^ Malmö?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Är Malmöska inte lika Göteborgska? :)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Gosh, I'm not from Copenhagen. xD
I can see Helsingborg from my roof.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I unfortunately don't have semlor, nor could I manage to ship them in less than two weeks, if I did indeed had them. :P
Malmöskar talar skånska, jag tror.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Well, if RP sounds like Jamaican, malmöitiska = göteborska. :P
Sarah Karoline
RP <= Jamaican.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Helene, poor sod. :/
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I have a very pretty picture taken of the land across the waters of Helsingborg. [One can't complain till one has visited Sala on Sunday]
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Am I the only one here, who hasn't been to Scandinavia at all?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Our main problem here is:
1. [Nord man] [gjörte]
2. och ljuden gjorde ljuden [gjutninger] i gjusen.
3.Träna, [träna], runt denna sjö [sjenö] ljusen
4. [släkten]Släkten är värst
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Of Helsingöuhrrh?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Ah!
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson Anna, quite possibly
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt ...Does it sound like that?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Oh, there we go, one actual comment related to Språkspelet :P
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I haven't been to Europe at all... Don't worry Anna.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Ah wait, I forgot!
I live in Wales!!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'm highly confused? xD As a Dane should be. Also I should be drunk and trying to swim in the icecold water, men altså, dog.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Yes. I was being moderate.
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson
Mikkel Ramzuiv Pittmann Wilson Could I ask for a refresh?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Wales counts, Vincensiu :P
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Sorry for being off-topic :) [I want to take part in SpS but I may not.]
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Haha, that's ok :P We're at a bit of a standstill in the round, so this is what naturally happens when trying to bribe the host with semlor ;)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Well I haven't been to Scandinavia anyway....

Mikkel:

I didn't follow the translation part, but I guess you all are better than me in translating... won't take an hour for you people to translate them.

Victor Can you confirm that all the words that ARE NOT in brackets are correct??
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström No, the first ljuden is wrong, as well as capitalisations and punctuation. That said, I won't know if all are correct until you translate. :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter ok, edited
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I'll take another stab at the third line. Still don't get the first bracket.

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter och JUDEN gjorde ljuden JUNIÖR i gjusen. ??
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins ljudningar is what I thought the first time, but it didn't come up as a word in any dictionary I had, so I thought maybe it was gjutninger.

Any chance we missed a sound, and it was bjudning?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Also, I don't think "normens" is capitalised.
Any chance one of the "tomten" is actually capitalised?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Victor didn't directly criticise tomten,
maybe träna vs Träna vs TRÄNÄ ??

or maybe ljudnivåer?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Juden is correct. :) Capitalisations are used only for proper nouns, "tomten" needn't be capitalised. :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter only 1 correct guess??
hmmm... I guess 1 is better than nothing,

now this mysterious /judniə:r/ sounds...
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Juden gjorde ljuden just ned i gjusen/Gjusen?
..I think I might need to take a break. xD
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I'm unleashing Sarah to help you out!
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Just got home from quite a long day (14 hrs of work)... here are some admittedly hopeless attempts at bridging the gaps before I retire to bed :p

- Nordmännen?
- I thought one of the two släkten derived from släkt and the other from släkte, but I suppose not.
- Could "sjenö" be something related to stjärna?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström 1. Sort of.
2. Almost! But listen again.
3. No.

:p
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström However, since I got smashed in the eye during badminton practice, I'm gonna go to sleep now!
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres My word! I'm sad to hear that that fate has befallen you. I too have had my eye smashed into during a badminton game... and I suspect foul play to this day :p.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Nah, his smash was fair. And bleeding fast.

Can't exactly tell people a shuttlecock hit me in the eye though.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Wish you a fast recovery, and we shall await your approval once we've progressed a bit more :-P
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt The more I struggle with this, the more I wanna record Danish.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins So win this round, and then you get to torment us all :-P
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt For a Dane I'm surprisingly bad at Swedish. I can't win. ^^'
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins For an American, I am surprisingly capable of Old Norse, keep in mind. xD I am pretty sure you have a chance.
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua For a Latin American, I'm surprisingly good at creating a new orthography for Swedish, hahahah. Jk.

Is anyone awake? I want to continue with this bad boy, but I know I can't do it alone :p
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I have been released from my cell. Here are three lines:

Tänk nu på [hur/ju] ”namnen” skiljs på ”namnen”, och kann man skiljer ”anden” från ”anden” från ”andan”.

Litet skiljer 'pärser' från 'perser' och andra katter.

Norrmännen njöt av rom och rom som romer i Rom.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Hur is already established! :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline And the rest? :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "hur" really sounds like "ju" - haha
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua I think it goes like this....

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter To be able to advance in a Swedish round, one must consume a Swedish delicacy, so our brain will be synchronised to the Swedes' brain.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Not norrmänNEN. ^^
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Ser ni ljusen?
Manoj Kumar
Manoj Kumar Namaste,

Thank you.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Norrmännan?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Norrman (sg.) Norrmän (pl.) Norrman (sg. def.) Norrmännen (pl.def.) [I only hear pl.def.. :(]
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström It's the pl.indef. :p And Helene is correct again! :D
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Did anyone try 'Släktens' yet?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström See, you can understand it!
Sarah Karoline
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I thought det was correct??

our remaining unsolved phrase is:

I see green, I see blue, I see multicolour, but I see no red...
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins No, Sarah is probably right; det was one of the words Victor said was wrong!
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins And line three should read "ser ni ljusen", thanks to Helene :-)
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Are you referring to us by colour, Vincensiu? Very reminiscent of "Reservoir Dogs" :p. I've been quiet during today and yesterday except for one or two unsuccessful interventions because of my schedule - thirty minutes at the most of free time, and the rest working, with a bit of sleeping and cooking - all this on top of quite a problematic illness. It was also right in the middle of the working day when you wrote. Luckily, I have some free time tomorrow, but having contributed a fair bit to the cracking of the puzzle on Sunday, I find these last bits to very, very difficult to crack! There's only so much nuance you can hear with these particularly bad ears.

But let's try in the forlorn hope of making some progress...
* gör__? or something related to hjör?
* Träna tränar?
* This "gjutninger"... could it possibly be ____ ni är or ____ ni ger?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Haha yeah, colour of profile pic
Most likely I'll be absent for the next 24 hours due to work commitment :(
As much as I hate work, I gtg coz I'm financially desperate.
Probably I might be able to sneak in for fake toilet breaks and secretly turn my mobile to check sprogspelet while at work (as long as my clients/ supervisor don't know)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström One moment, you guys are so disorganised.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Summing up, and helping you out a bit with punctuation. The two ones are also the same word. :)

"Tänk nu på hur namnen skiljs på namnen, och hur man skiljer anden från anden från andan.

Litet skiljer 'pärser' från 'perser' och andra katter.

Helene Wiinholt Djupt?

Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Yup. Big difference.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Is 1 wrong?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Nope. :)

Andy Ayres 3 is not trärna, is it?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "djupt ned" [?]
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins [3] = tränar ?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Ned and ner are essentially synonymous. And no, Andy - sorry.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Nope, not tränar either!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt tränare?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Nope. Think outside of the box - maybe you're not missing something, but rather I am?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Perhaps a consonant is missing... [?]
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Perhaps it's two words, and not one?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Perhaps it's not Swedish and Victor is just trying to trick us and believe it is?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Trädena?
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres All these years I recommended Swedish as the best North Germanic language to learn to those who asked me my opinion... I now feel sorry for those poor souls that I misguided :p
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Swedish is fun.
Not just for masochists. :P
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt At least it's better than Danish.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I studied it in the days of yore.... It's fun (when things go to plan), as is Danish :)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Note the "if" clause there.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Anna! Correct! Except it's wrongly declined.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I knew I did that wrong. :-P
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Trädna?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Hmm... Not grammatically correct yet.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Okej, settling this: träden
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "Träna träden (är) runt denna sjö." Is there an "är" after "träden".
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres An attempt at a translation, but my attempt gets pretty bad towards the end judging by how surreal some of the sentences are.

Think now of how names are distinguished from namesakes, and how one distinguishes between the spirit, the duck and the ghost.

Little distinguishes trials from Persians and other cats.

Norwegians enjoyed rum and roe, like Roma in Rome.

But the norm’s deficiencies break, and the Jewish person made noises deep in the osprey.

Train, trees, around this lake; do you see the lights?

Genera’s family are worst, but are (noble) families even worse?

A clown has sabotaged Sabbath; that clown from the garden on the gnome.

Do not swear* over Sweden and that language is led to the time that is gone. Good luck!

* Or is it some colloquial rendering of Sverige?
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent I dont; reckon you wold be far off Andy Ayres, as I think part of the point of the passage was to highlight the similar sounding words with different meanings, often differentiates only tonally.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I feel as if maybe garden and gnome should be switched, but it still doesn't quite make sense :-P
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins And yes, I am pretty sure Victor confirmed that "svärje inte" is indeed "do not swear".
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres I don't know, Adrian, I think the Jewish osprey and the end of the last sentence in particular are too funky to be correct, even in an exercise like this! The gnome garden line is weird too; I agree with you, Anna, that swapping them makes more sense, but i put them in that order going by the pitch accent each word is supposed to have and what it sounds like to me (probably incorrectly!).
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Not osprey. :) And revise a few pairs. Roma is wrong, by the way. And you need a new translation of "förs".
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Isn't Gjusen a lake too?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins My interpretation of some of the lines:

¤ Norwegians enjoyed rum and roe, like wandering in Rome.

¤ Don't swear over Sweden, and the language before time is the way.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Helene is correct!

Sorry, Anna :/ The clue is in the tone.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I should listen again when I get the chance :P
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Yeah, "förs" and "som [...] i Rom" are what you are looking for!
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Oh! Wait, is it like the expression, "as the Romans do in Rome" ?
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Sort of
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt By this point my brain is just going: 'Is this even Swedish?'
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Förs: for/because ?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström No, unfortunately not, on both questions. :/ And Billy - don't trick them!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Don't give up now!

Andy I tried förstäv, but Victor said Mnnoo...
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Perhaps it´s a contraction of för and an article or pronoun?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström It's not a noun or a verb, so images won't be very helpful. :p And it is indeed a contraction, or rather abbreviation of A word.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I recommend translating the ensuing part of the sentence!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Ughhh I misread your earlier post Victor, I thought you said "It is a noun".... stupid me...
Anyway whoever win this round, maybe we should go back to traditional sprogspelet... text....
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Maybe I just made it a bit too... Difficult?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Somehow, that doesn't surprise me. :P

Isn't förs a contraction of some sort of adverb?
Unfortunately, I can't really listen again, as I'm in a public place and besides the fact that it would be hard to hear it, it would also be weird if I turned up the volume on my laptop. :P

As a result, I can't figure out which gången is which, simply based on the written transcription. If I made sense of it by knowing what förs was, it might be clearer to me. But it's like a math equation where I'm missing three variables D:
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström If you're missing three, just make a system and substitute! ^^
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter you all sounds like very intelligent people here...
I feel stupid
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I did that with circuits all morning!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Ooh! What did you work with? :D

Okay, last clue: Förrns
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins We were just practising every possible case in existence for node voltage analysis :P Willing to bet that it's more than likely on our quiz on Friday.

The hint is flying over my head... I am going to look into this more, before I continue trying, as it seems I'm stabbing at thin air. No idea if that's actually an idiom, or if I'm sleep-deprived enough that I just made something up :P
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Untill?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Ah, Kirchhoff's then? :D How boring. :/

And the Dane's right! :D
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Yeah, it was pretty easy. There were some fun cases, though. Or at least more interesting than the really basic circuits. :)

See, Helene, you /can/ possibly win this round :D
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'm just too disorganised to have an overview of everything.. ^^'
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Have you started with differential voltages yet? :)

Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins förrän, if Helene is correct.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström The second. :)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins And no, we haven't gotten to differential voltages yet, and I can't remember if we start those during this semester, or the next. I'm in a differential equations course, as well, but all we've been doing is (boring) population models and salt concentration in a water tank.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline My source: lexikon.ordspel.se

Helene Wiinholt I know the word förrns, which in Danish would be 'førend'. Förrän is the Swedish equivalent.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I got it when you said "until" :P
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Sorry Helene, I hadn't seen your post :)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström There's more to it, it's very applicable in physics. :P

Excellent, excellent, now let's not get stuck!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Don't swear about Sweden and that language until time has passed (literally: *is gone.) ?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Yes! :D
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Yes, it's taught in our electrophysics class as well :P

Yay, Sarah :D
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline But what is time.... (but that's a question for a different topic :) )
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins A relative way of measuring a progression of a process that occurs, which quite possibly has an inverse in another dimension? :P
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline You passed! :)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Speaking of which, I need to run to physics class now :P
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I prefer to view it as a function of the scalar expansion of the universe, neglecting relative time.

Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Ask him why you can't derive a social scientist!
Sarah Karoline

Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Was Sarah right, btw?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Romany or Romani, yes! :D
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'm gonna try to sum up what we have. (Hope I remembered everything.)

Think now of how names are distinguished from namesakes, and how one distinguishes between the spirit, the duck and the ghost.

Little distinguishes trials from Persians and other cats.

Norwegians enjoyed rum and roe, like the Romany in Rome.

But the norm’s deficiencies break, and the Jewish person made noises deep in Gjusen.

Train, trees, around this lake; do you see the lights?

Genera’s family are worst, but are (noble) families even worse?

A trick has sabotaged Sabbath; that trick from the gnome in the garden.

Don't swear about Sweden and that language until time has passed.
Good luck!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Close! There's still a pair that needs checking, though. And the second to last line isn't fully correct.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Groom the trees around this lake; do you see the lights?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström The first pair. :)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'm so confused by this point. xD
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Listen to "namnen" :p
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt This is not helping my natural hatred towards anything Swedish, which I was born with as a Dane.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Don't worry, we hate you too! :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter uuurghhh this very last moment...
when all the answer are nearly revealed... almost there
When the victory is just a step ahead

I can see Helene is in the lead atm, but will she be crowned as the champion??
Or will stjälcuri change everything completely??
Who will be crowned as the winner of this puzzling Swedish round??
we shall see the development in the next episode, but for now little Vincey has to go to dreamland...
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Or will the bridge be severed?!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Öresund?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström C'mon, you can get this!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Should names and namesakes be switched, or are there more meanings to the word?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Any bridge, even a metaphysical bridge. [Just light-hearted banter as I'm too exhausted to think! haha]
Good luck to all players :) Or should that be "tillykke".
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Yes, Helene! :D Switch'em! Same with the spirit and duck. Then there's just the second "pajas" which is wrongly translated. :p
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Antic/idea?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Nope, sorry.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'm afraid my English vocabulary isn't very big, so I'm kinda lost.
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres A late night attempt :p...

Think now of how names are distinguished from namesakes, and how one distinguishes between the duck, the spirit and the ghost.

Don't swear about Sweden and that language until time has passed. Good luck!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt that clown and the gnome in the garden?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline And now we have two contenders. Who shall win? Will the trophy across the Still Sea or be passed to the Roaring Seas of this Isle? Perhaps a stjälcurier will appear in these final moments and the trophy will be diverted to a distant shore, where it's hitherto not yet visited.... :)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins A clown has sabotaged Sabbath; that trick by the gnome from the garden?

Anna Robbins

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Trivia: The round fell into "pale orange" category with the rating 4816.
4th highest rating from all sprogspelets round to date.

By the way, do you think it's a good idea to make the system send an email to your email addresses whenever there's a new round and new thread?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Oops :P My bad. xD I was having issues trying to tag people as well, but from my mobile :P which is an issue unto itself. So, thank you guys for tagging people :D

I think the email idea is nice, although I usually get notifications galore anyway, so I know when it starts :P But sure, if it saves us from tagging people. And sorry, I'm studying for circuits again, so I'll come up with a new round once I'm awake in the morning and post it here. Apologies for the delay!
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo No worries, we are helpful tagging bots (not to be confused with helpful glossing bot).

Or I can try to make the system send messages into Facebook Messages too, or both (let each person have option)... A new feature coming soon :)

Unfortunately I can't tag people by posting a computer-generated comment.

I am still in my leave of absence though, I will start joining our rounds after my work is done :)
