Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Rondo 196:
Still trying to find the sweet spot for a Japanese round. Let's see how this action packed dialogue goes, as opposed to that poetic stuff we've tried before:

----

魔王:「ほら、ほら!俺の凄く素晴らしくスーパーエフェクティブの浣腸を見ろよ!こりゃぁぁ!」

勇者:「ぐっ、てめえ!」

魔王:「わははあ~。心配するな。次のアッタクで、お前の運命を定めるぜ!デスビーム~~!!!」

*ビュ~~~~~ン*

勇者:「うわあっ!!くそ、どうしたらいい?!星神様、助けてお願い!」

-----

Maou: "Hora, hora! Ore no sugoku-subarashiku-suupaa-efekutibu-no kanchou wo miro yo! Koryaaa!"

Yuusha: "Gu-, temee!"

Maou: "Wahahaa~. Shinpai-suruna. Tsugi-no attaku-de, omae-no unmei-wo sadameru-ze! Desubiimu!!!"

*Byuuuuuuuuuun*

Yuusha: "Uwaa-!! Kuso, dou-shitara ii?! Hoshigami-sama, tasukete onegai!"
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Now, an important hint.

First stage of a "kanchou"
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Second stage of a "kanchou".

And thus the lifecycle of the "kanchou" is complete.
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia Oh, I've got it! It's Japanese! :v
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith (actually, technically the lifecyle is complete when the mother proceeds to beat sense into her unruly brat, but some argue the kanchou has already passed on by that point)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Nicolás you're on a roll!
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia Amaze~desu!
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee For the first set of dialogue I got "Maou-Look! Look! I (masculine)" [no] "awfully wonderful(ly?) super(?) [efekutibu] [no] "government?" "feelings?" "counting/calculations?" [wo] "saw? (emphatic)! " "Korea?"
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Kanchou's meaning is explained in the pictoral guide given :P
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith "Look!" is about as close as you'll get, I'll accept that, "awfully wonderfully super" is all good, "efekutibu", think of Japanicised English, "saw" is on the right track but wrong verb form, emphatic is correct too. Very good!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Also, I forgot to tag people!
Dago Lesmes, Vincensiu Dionisiu, Arief Wibowo, Billy James Brightraven, Andy Ayres, Matteo Cheri, Josva Petersson Thorkell, Edmund Yong, Anna Robbins, Maria Weidner, Sarah Karoline, Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström, and so on.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee So efekutibu is "effective."
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Yep, dull word eh? :)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Robbin Michels, but I'm not *yet* the winner in Språkspelet :)
--
My research into kanchou yields this:
Robbin Michels
Robbin Michels I was hoping to forget what kancho means.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee So Maou-"Look! Look! I (masc.)" [no] "awfully wonderfully super effective" [no] "kancho" [wo] "(some other form of 'saw' I haven't figured out yet) (emphatic)! Korea!"
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Except the Korea! Whoops, forgot about that haha! Let's see if someone else knows about "koryaaaaa!", before I hint that one out. For now, just assume it's like "hora" in context.

Arief Wibowo that's the middle stage of the kanchou
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo My further research into the same word yields:
1. kanchou = a spy
2. kanchou = authorities
3. kanchou = Cabinet Secretary
4. kanchou = captain
5. kanchou = director
6. kanchou = ebb tide
7. kanchou = enema
8. kanchou = government office
9. kanchou = superintendent
http://www.kanjijapanese.com/en/dictionary-japanese-english/kanchou
[I actually have no idea what's the meaning of the word from Christian James Meredith's 2-stage pictures]
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo A ha, got it now :D
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Arief Wibowo the meaning is your statue. It's a childish prank.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Same thing happening in the anime pictures
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger Are the characters that mean "rinse" & "intestines" part of the word "kanchu." That would make sense...
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Yep, the kanji are there, "浣腸"
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Is everyone getting the Kanji/Kana + Romaji?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo I didn't see closely enough, so I thought your anime pictures are showing a kid turning into a woman :P

I so far failed to uncover the interjections like "Koryaaa" and "Byuuuuuuuuuun"...

However, I am sure that "attaku" means "attack"

[I must now exit back to work... See you guys!]
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Byuuns a sound effect
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith (I'll have to get back to the rest later, sorry!)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Ughh waking up to a Japanese round... sadly work today so limited input :S
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee If I'm not mistaken, the first [no] turns the pronoun before it into a genitive, so he's really saying "My awful(ly) wonderful(ly)..." Is this right? Is the second [no] turning the adjectives before it into adverbs, so "effectively?" This doesn't seem to make sense. Is this a passive construction? If it is, at least I got a couple more words figured out.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Wrik Chatterjee, -no is a genitive marker indeed (except with verbs - but that's not here so don't think about tit)

-no has no adverbial role (the adverb of -no is -de, or -ni).

Think about what relationship "super-effective" and "kanchou" (anus-attack) might have (it's very simply, actually, but Japanese uses -no here because "effective" is a loanword, and therefore doesn't work according to native Japanese grammar).
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Now, "attaku" is "attack". Although TBH I think I spelt it wrong! I think it might be "atakku". Oh well! It's one of the two, and you got it right! :D
Zev Brȹk
Zev Brȹk I'm back for the Japanese! I haven't played in a long time, but this makes it worth it. (Although I would like to put it on record that CJM's taste in anime may be slightly lacking from my perspective given his choice here. But I haven't actually watched it, so perhaps I can't judge, and at least I can't cheat thus.)
Zev Brȹk
Zev Brȹk OK, my attempt:
Maou: Look, [it's] my awfully wonderfully super effective enema*! Haiyaaaahhhh!
Hero: Ugh, you sonuvabitch!
Maou: Bwahaha! Don't worry, with this next attack, your fate is sealed**! Deathbeam!!!
~~Pewwwwwnnnnn/[laser-like noise]~~
Hero: Aaaaugh! Shit, now what***? Oh [Lord] Star-God, please help me!

*This is how I'd like to translate it, but per CJM's hint I suppose that "anus-attack" is to be preferred.
**An idiomatic translation; to be more literal, I might use "settled" or "established".
***This is very loose, I'll admit. But I can't do better while preserving my understanding of the sense intended.
Note that my treatment of sound effects is rather janky (q.v.), but I couldn't really do any better without the anime's visual context. Also, things in brackets seem to me to help the flow in translation, but not necessarily to exist in the original.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee I ran into this :P . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maoyu Is it important in context, and, by extension, the translation, that a female character is referring to herself with a traditionally masculine pronoun? Is it just there to mark which dialect she's speaking? Am I just wrong?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Zev Brȹk just to clarify this has nothing to do with Nagi no Asukara apart from the Kanchou (that said, despite a massive break from reality in terms of the physical setting, it's a beautiful show with great characters *cries*).

This is more like Samurai Flamenco in genre.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Zev Brȹk if you're having a go at Maoyuu though, THEN WE HAVE A PROBLEM *sharpens sword*
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith To clarify: Maoyuu is an anime (and presumably this holds true for the original light novel) where everyone refers to eachother by their character roles. E.g. "Yo, hero, watcha doin'?". So, yes, Maou essentially has a "boy's name". It's a bit... weird.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Now for the game:
Zev Brȹk, I will put in () things you got wrong. Sorry Andy, I forgot your system :-/

Maou: Look, [it's]* my awfully wonderfully super effective anus-attack! Haiyaaaahhhh!
Hero: Ugh, you sonuvabitch!**
Maou: Bwahaha!*** Don't worry, with this next attack, your fate is sealed! Deathbeam!!!
~~Pewwwwwnnnnn/[laser-like noise]~~
Hero: Aaaaugh! Shit, (now what)****? Oh [Lord] Star-God, please help me!

* Technically, the first part is a taunt of sorts (in this context) that demands attention, and the verb (at the end of the original Japanese sentence) is indeed "look/see/watch!". Maybe "Ho ho, watch my ..." might work better? I'll count it as right anyway.

**Spot on. Anything like this works. It's a pronoun of contempt.

***MWAHAHAHA sounds a little more threatening to me, given this guy's evil, but I'll give it to you anwyay.

****Just to confirm, can you think of another rhetorical question that might translate this phrase? Perhaps involving "should"? If you can, then I'll accept the answer you have here :P

I'll clean it up now:

Demon Lord: Ho ho, watch my awfully wonderfully super effective kanchou! Hyaaah!
Hero: Ugh, you sonova!
Demon Lord: Mwahaha! Don't worry, with this next attack, your fate is sealed! DEATHBEAM!!!
*Pew*
Hero: Aaaaugh! Shit, _______? O' God of the Stars, hear my wish: help me!
Zev Brȹk
Zev Brȹk Cleaned-up version, now finalised:
Demon Lord: Ho ho, watch my awfully wonderfully super effective kanchou! Hyaaah!
Hero: Ugh, you sonuvabitch!
Demon Lord: Mwahaha! Don't worry, with this next attack, your fate is sealed! DEATHBEAM!!!
*Pew*
Hero: Aaaaugh! Shit, what should I do [now]? O God of the Stars, hear my wish: help me!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Excellent! We have a winner! :D
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Damn it :P . I knew Zev Brȹk had won, but I just tried to cast his work into doubt. So much for that.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith (BTW, if anyone wanted the middle stage of the Kanchou between those two pictures before: http://animediet.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/kanchou.gif )

KANCHOU OMEDETOU GOZAIMASU = Kanchou-congratulations!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Zev Brȹk We are patiently waiting for the new round :D
And also would you mind starting a new thread?
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Also please make it interesting, like Pipil or Ancient Egyptian from before :) .
Zev Brȹk
Zev Brȹk It is my exquisite honour to introduce the 20th thread and Round 197 (or thereabouts) of everyone's favourite game, known in the common tongue as Språkspelet, or Sprogspelet to those who happen to worship at the cult of stød.

Malin Elisabeth Nilsson is our wise benefactress, revered as the semi-mythological originatrix of this epic translation game.

Newcomers are encouraged to join or watch! For more information and a live feed, please see our website, courtesy of the charming Arief Wibowo:
