Round 209

Round
<< 1< 208210 >282 >>
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins All right, everyone! Thank you for your patience! I have harnessed the mesmerising evilness of Helene :P So we have an audio round, and since I'll be in and out until Saturday, she will co-moderate. Here is the link:

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1K5Aj4cvC20

Hopefully this isn't breaching any rules.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins And I'm pretty sure I'm busier, since I just took on a job offer and I have two exams before the weekend :p
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt *Raises hand* I'm neither studying nor working, so not busy at all. x'D
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Thank you Helene and Anna for this new recording :)
And here is a card for Anna
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt It puzzles me when people manage to call me Helen or Helena, when my name is actually written out. x'D *Got called both Helen and Helena earlier today as well*
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Sorry Helene, that was a high-speed typing error, a momentary glitch... :)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt xD It's fine. I don't mind. It just made me thing. :)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Thank you Sarah :) I'll still check in when I can xD
And people misspell my name all the time, too.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку I kind of got lost along the way, guys. Do we have a round?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins We do! I have no idea what the number is, but the round is an audio round, recorded in Danish by Helene, who is co-moderating with me :p
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I shall tag: Arief Vincensiu Christian Billy Andy Wrik Jake [I'm not able to tag anymore than seven ... :) ]
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Adrian Zev Edmund Maria Nicolás Victor Jake How's that?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Perfect! :)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Oops, we tagged Jake twice. Oh well :p

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Vincensiu is doing some vectors and got lost in directions....
Might have to temporarily absent from spgs...
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong so it's Danish?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Edmund: Yes, it's Danish.
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong I hate time zones!!! I have to sleep now :(
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter CJM n Arief r probably snoring atm. Hihihihi
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Oh good, I'm not working da sola! :)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Oops, forgot to tag Dago

Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Another gender change comment, huh :P
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Hahaha, oh dear.... there's no hope pour moi...
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Uh, here's a hint on some of the transcription, and I'll let Helene handle the rest. Keep in mind how the Ds and Vs sound, and also how certain consonants can sound alike if they are doubled...
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Erm, does Danish have epenthetic /h/ before or after vowels?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins If you hear an H, it's probably an H.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee okay cool
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I should also mention to keep an ear out for Rs.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee So can those be epenthetic? Or can they be cut, like non-rhotic dialects of English? This just got so much more complicated :/ .
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Some of those consonants can be cut, yes. I don't think there's anything epenthetic in Danish, but I could be wrong. I wouldn't consider anything to be epenthetic, anyhow. But there's a lot of consonant cutting in the spoken language, so transcription isn't easy for non-natives.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt And I who thought I made it easy. Ups. xD
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Is the recording is something about driving?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Told you they wouldn't find it easy xD
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I forgot how little sense Danish makes.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins That's because you're Danish. xD
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Is this about spectroscopy, or some other branch of physics or chemistry? Did you really feel that evil?
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I make little sense as well-
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку I think a couple of As I heard were actually Rs on the run, but I'm not sure. Do /r/s in Danish work like in German? As in /r/ --> /ɐ/?
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt There's nothing specifically about driving, but the first sentence is somehow related to it. Vincensiu.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt It's just random sentences, Wrik, don't worry, I'm not /that/ evil. xD
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee At least not yet.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St%C3%B8d
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee I hate you guys so much :P .
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Omg. There's a whole page on that. x'D I feel sorta sorry for you.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Draft 1: There are lots of errors (bracketed words to be worked on after dinner), but here's entertainment part 1...

Wrik Chatterjee Well that helps. Otherwise I couldn't find one and was planning on using a Norwegian dictionary to try to find cognates.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'm gonna try to make this understandable. xD

Billy James Brightraven Oh god, Danish
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I'll attempt a second version...
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Possible IPA transcription: /teva pːlest fɑdən flɶ pilest es mudə jem po hɔːlom hena kʰepʰo ɔt skvelɔː bile kʰjembæ bile tveleɪ iŋemenslən vo ineʔon smol moaːgə hoaːtəs eʔ skilimen aʔnskriː vedʌ in vielɑ po pœːŋge bogə viʔnə una tiat͡sil hilʔa desɑ ʔet buna hilə buna/. Keep in mind that I have little idea about what I'm doing.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee I may have really screwed up...
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline This is so mean, but also fun Anna and Helene :) :)

Here's my second version, which isn't too different from version 1... I've only changed the letters written in capital letters and left words I've not worked out yet as - . Perhaps the overnight crew will find them...!

----
Det var billigst for den fleRe bilist AT - hjem på -lågen.
Han har - aT -.
VILLIGT kæmper viLL - i ingenmandsland - i natten - om mørKe hørdes et skil- angstskrig.
Var det en - manD bringe, - vi ikke unde.
DeRTIL - DISSE at - fødeR bøNNE
---
Anecdotal thoughts: The last three words sound like "bø?ne fø?de bønne", stød in the first two, but none in the last.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt It's great to see that someone is actually trying, though. :P

Det var billigst for den [fleRe] bilist AT - hjem på -lågen.
Han [har] - [aT] -.
[VILLIGT] kæmper {viLL} - i ingenmandsland - i {natten} - [om] mørKe [hørdes] et [skil-] angstskrig.
[Var] det [en] - [manD] bringe, - vi ikke [unde].
DeRTIL - [DISSE] (<-Actually two words) at - [fødeR] {bøNNE}
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Regarding the last three words then there's stød in the first, I'm not sure about the other since I don't hear it. (Deaf to my own language. xD)
The second word doesn't start with an 'f'.
Keep in mind that when a word ends with 'e' in Danish, it has a specific sound. My name has it too. But the last word doesn't end with that sound, ergo, it doesn't end with an 'e'. But the word itself is right, just not the form.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Mange tak for your review and commentary :)
There's a post on Omniglot about how different a language sounds to learners and fluent/native speakers. I try to be deaf to English when I don't want to hear it!
---
The last sentence: Dertil heder de *siger at .... bønner. [*?]
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt The last word is indeed 'bønner' :)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Not exactly, but it's closer.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline This is my third attempt. Again the changes I've made are written in capital letters. I'll try again in the morning, unless fellow sprogspelare's have finished it overnight!
----
Version 3. Det var billigst for den [flere] bilist at - hjem på -lågen.
Han [har] - [aT] -.
[VilliG] kæmper {vill} - i ingenmandsland - i nattenS - OG mørKe [hørdes] et [skil-] angstskrig.

Dertil heDDer deT - at bø- [?ødeR] bønner.
---
God nat from me..!
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Me nem nesa, can we have a summary?
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I see you guys are having fun with it :-) sorry I'm not being very helpful here.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt You're getting somewhere. xD

Det var billigst for den [flere] bilist at - hjem på -lågen.
Han [har] - [aT] -.
[VilliG] kæmper {vill} - i ingenmandsland - i nattenS - OG mørKe [hørdes] et [skil-] angstskrig.

Dertil heDDer deT - at bø- [?ødeR] bønner.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Mange tak, Helene I shall put my cloth ears to the test again shortly!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Here is draft 4. This is getting harder :)
Words and letters I've changed are in capital letters. Words in brackets I can't figure out (yet)... :)
----
Det var billigst for den [flere] bilist at SMU- hjem på (Hɛ:u)lågen.
Han ER (kæp) HØJ at (SKVø:?ðe)
VI - kæmper viL ET - i ingenmandsland HVOR i nattenS - OG mørKe [hørdes] et [skil-] angstskrig.

Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I've found another Danish pronunciation resource for fellow sprogspelares doing this task behind the scenes... :)

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter 加油 Sarah, since you are the only active player...
I'm going to bed soon. Lycka Till :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Mean, so mean :)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt No one else dare try the Danish round? xD

Det var billigst for den [flere] bilist at SMU- hjem på (Hɛ:u)lågen.
Han ER (kæp) {HØJ} at (SKVø:?ðe)

Dertil heDDer deT (sa)- at [bønner] [?øder] bønner

I haven't corrected the ones in ( ) because I don't understand that IPA-thingy. >.>
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I'll try again tomorrow, lest the overnight crew finish it....!

I can't decide upon a Danish spelling for the two words in (what I hope is correct) IPA! They sound like:
Hɛ:u / "hey-oo." (hævo, heve, havo)
Bɔ:g / Bɔ:gø / "borg(e)" (but I don't that words makes sense in the sentence..)
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger I may jump in this weekend. That starts tomorrow, right? Please say it does...
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Suddenly, Irish orthography makes great sense *cough*Andy Ayres*cough*
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I have a question for all of you who've listened to the recording.
How does Danish sound to you?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter The melody sounds a bit like Andy's first Irish recording...
Doesn't sound like the neighbouring Swedish or Norwegian at all, unless Helene, you got an exotic accent
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I speak more or less Rigsdansk which is know as the flat kinda Danish.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I love the sound of Danish, and I wish I could understand the spoken language much better than I'm doing :) At university we weren't taught to understand or pronounce it. Now I've found that "dansk udtale" channel, I can change that :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter My lacking of Danish vocabulary hinders me from solving this round :(
It's really difficult to transcribe a recording in a language when you are not familiar with its words...
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Especially Danish ;-)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo I wonder if my box of Kjeldsens can be of any help...?
[I am still on Sprogspelet-diet mode to finish and release my mobile app project]
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Since I can't help with the transcription, I'll just help with the translation.
So far, what I can work out:
Det var billigst for = it was cheapest for
bilist = driver
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Is there a "flyde" in there? I swear I'm hearing in the first part a [fl-[FRONT VOWEL]-[VELARISED DENTAL FRICATIVE/APPROXIMANT]-(@)].
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Vincensiu's translation is correct.
And no, Christian, there is no 'flyde' in there. :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline And here is draft 5: Danish spelling is a bit difficult sometimes (like English) :D :D
Words written in capitals = new suggestions.
Words within / / are some of the sounds I hear, or words which aren't in the dictionary.
... = missing word.
---
Det var billigst for den *flede/fløde* bilist at *smo/smu/smy* DET hjem på *HæVOLågen/HAVOågen*.
Han er /kæphøj/kephøj at SKVADE.
Vi … kæmper VI … … i ingenmandsland hvor i nattens MULM og mørke HøRTES et SKRIGENDE angstskrig.
*Bær/Bar/Ber* det … … *mand* bringe, *børger/borger* vi ikke under.
Dertil hedder det *sa...* at BØNDER *hørder* bønner.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt How can we get more people involved? xD I almost feel sorry that you have to sit with this all on your own.

Det var billigst for den [/flede/fløde/] (<- It's almost correct, it's just the first vowel you miss) bilist at [/smo/smu/smy DET] (<- It's one word) hjem på [HæVOLågen/HAVOågen/].
Han er /kæphøj/kephøj (<- the first is correct) [at] [SKVADE] (<- the first five letters are correct though).
[Vi] … (<- It's just one word) kæmper [VI] … … i ingenmandsland hvor i nattens MULM og mørke HøRTES et [SKRIGENDE] angstskrig.
/Bær/Bar/Ber/ det … … /mand/ bringe, /børger/borger/ vi ikke under.
Dertil hedder det [(sa)-] at BØNDER [hørder] bønner.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline It's good listening practice for me, Ms Cloth Ears, but I feel a bit self-conscious now I'm on my 5th draft :D
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'm actually surprised you've gotten this far so quickly, it is Danish after all. xD
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline There have been previous rounds where only one or two sprogspelares have taken part, so this isn't the only time where there is only one (visible) player. Perhaps our fellow sprogspelares are working behind the scenes...
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen This is my first encounter with språkspelet. SO interesting having my mother tongue dissected. Keep up the good work.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline New attempts: *flade *skvader *smodde/smudde/smydde *mange
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Welcome to Sprogspelet Rasmus :)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'm assuming you could agree with me that I chose some pretty random sentences, Rasmus? :)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen very random, I'll give you that ;) And just so I get it too. "We" (Ie. Karoline) are working on the transcript and after that the object is to do the translation to English?
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Yes, exactly. :)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Very existing... :) Iam amused... looking very much forward to the result. Not everything is exactly easy to translate.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I used a bit of slang just to throw people off. ;)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen it's good, I like it ;)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "I used a bit of slang to throw people off": How nice of you :D I found one slang term...
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'm a Dane after all, we love confusing people.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Checking progress here. xD this is entertaining to see. It's a shame a few others haven't joined presently, but perhaps some more might appear. Velkommen til Sprogspelet, Rasmus! :-)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen indeed! and thank you all. This is one of the more useful activities I have found on FB. You guys have restored my faith in humanity.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "I'm a Dane after all, we love confusing people" Манге так, Хелене!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt *Bows* Always at your service.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I would have transcribed Helene's name in Cyrillic using the other 'e' at the end (I don't have Cyrillic on my phone unless I switch it right now, and I'm just lazy :-P).
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline This one? Russian "э" ? :)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Is allowed to help? I could translate the whole thing into Malagasy and you can transcribe that instead... ;) although I would be kind of f..... with a word or two. :)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Sarah, yes, that one xD
Rasmus, you're allowed to give hints, like what Helene is doing (I'm technically supposed to be moderating, but I've been busy and I'm no better than Sarah at understanding spoken Danish, at least not yet).
Speaking of Danish, I'm at a restaurant, and they're playing Aqua.... I can't believe they still play Aqua around here. It's the second or third time since January that I've heard them played. :-P
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen What a crazy world we live in... ;)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I'll be even crazier, if I live in Denmark for a year ;-) I'm planning to study there.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Anna: I was writing in lazy Serbian Cyrillic which only has one "e" :D Less letters than Russian is one of its advantages!
Aqua as in "Barbie Girl" :O'
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Good luck with that. I hear it's a nice place ;)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen oh yes... like in Barbie Girl.
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Anna Robbins I think you would find, if you are going to live there, that Aqua are proper more famous where you are at now (more or less wherever that is) than they ever were in Denmark ;)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt My little cousin adores Aqua. xD
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "Infamous" perhaps? :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline The sarcasttic version of the song was very popular here.
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen No but really, I think Denmark is a great place to study. Loads of good international student programs and activities at the universities. My master program were like 50/50 danes/int. students. NO, I am not a recruiter ;)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Sarah : Ahh, I didn't catch that you were using the Serbian alphabet! And... Yes, Barbie Girl, but I thought we were done with that after the early 2000s.....

Rasmus: I fully believe that :-P Actually, there are a number of Danish artists and bands I like more than Aqua. Although I do like Søren Rasted still, in Hej Matematik.

And I've been nominated by my home uni to study in Denmark, so as long as I'm accepted, I can study there and possibly work :-)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt My house is always open for tea and such, also I'd love to play tour guide, Anna. ;)
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Helene, I would definitely visit :-D although I'd mostly be in Odense, but I want to see other places, too. :-)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen I fear that Barbie girls will be for Denmark what Mamma Mia was for Sweden, an international evergreen... which people all over the world will help us remember FOREVER! only difference that ABBA is awesome ;)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I have a very good friend at the Uni in Odense, so I'd probably be going there once in a while anyways. :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Part 6: We All Sigh :) :) [I've only changed the words in capitals.

Det var billigst for den FLADE bilist at *SMODDE hjem på [...lågen].
Han er kæphøj OG SKVADER.

*I used a bit of poetic licence..

Non of the other words are right, I'm afraid.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Are all the individual letters wrong too? [I'm running out of vowels and consonants to choose :D]
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I have some questions to check I've understood correctly. In the third line:
Vi- (one word?) kæmper vill- (are there missing letters? In an earlier review {vill} had these brackets.] :)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen if Vi- and Vill- is what you have, then YES...
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Det var billigst for den flade bilist at sm____e hjem på ___lågen.
Han er kæphøj og __ skvad_er.

___ det ___ ____ m_ bringe, b____ vi ikke under.
Dertil hedder det s__ at bønder h___ bønner.

If this makes any sense at all. xD
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Yes, that's :D
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Version 7. I've only changed the words in capital letters. Other words are still being contemplated :)

Det var billigst for den flade bilist at SMUTTE hjem på HAVElågen.
Han er kæphøj og SKVADDER.
VILLET kæmper VILLE … i ingenmandsland hvor i nattens mulm og mørke hørtes et [skill-ende-] angstskrig.

Dertil hedder det SAGDE at bønder HøRTE bønner.

*”ma” = colloquial ”mig”, perhaps
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Smutte, havelågen, skvadder and ville are correct. :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline *VæRLIG* i ingenmandsland. The pronunciation of "have" in "havelågen" is so different to its spelling :)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Welcome to Danish.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Students learning English say the same thing about how English is spelled/spelt :D This is revenge at its coldest! haha
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Little note: as I can read Danish well, I shall refrain from translating it, so I'll leave this to other players, lest I break the Sprogspelet rules and find myself banished to Spelvetta :)
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee That's what I was counting on.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Since I am still on my Sprogspelet-diet (only until early April, hopefully), the best I can contribute is to streeeeetch Helene Wiinholt from side to side...
http://vocaroo.com/i/s1qvsB6Gazd2
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Version 8 (or is it 83.. :D ): The words between * * don't make sense, but this is what they sound like! Words in capitals are my latest suggestions.

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter thanks Helene, but I'm still working on vectors atm, will look into it while I'm free and start working on the translation
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Sorry, Vincensiu, I saw your post while I was in a hurry and then completely forgot about it.
A bottle of wine is not something you'd give to newlyweds or pregnant women. In the first case, you'd give something for their new house: a dinnerware set, small furniture, a painting, a carpet. Usually you would plan your gift with others so as not to give the same thing twice or thrice. In the second case, it would be something for the baby: a babygro, a rattle or similar toys.
Note that this applies if you're a close friend or a relative of the newlyweds/pregnant woman. If not, I think a flower bouquet in a nice vase would be alright.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Draft 9. Only the words in capital letters are different. I wish someone could help with the other three words .... :D :)

Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Hello everybody!

My entry for the 2nd sentence (Han er kæphøj og ER skvadder, thanks Sarah Karoline) is:
He is arrogant and foolish.
Or: He is arrogant but foolish.

--
han=he
er=be/is
kæphøj=presumptuous*
og=and
skvadder=foolish**

Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Which brings me to another question: are the sentences disjointed or I simply haven't seen the bigger picture? :P
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins The sentences are indeed disjointed, Arief :-P they aren't really related to one another, so if you're not getting the Odyssey out of it, that's why ;-)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo A haaa... I was checking both Vincensiu Dionisiu's and my translation to find out how the poor driver become arrogant and foolish. Bye bye context-based guessings...
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo *doing Språkspelet yoga to warm up my Sprogspelet muscles*

My entry for 4th sentence (HVOR det end MED bringe, BUKKER vi ikke under, thanks Sarah Karoline) is:

It didn't make any sense, did it? :P

Arief Wibowo Need more Kjeldsens!!!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I've been sleeping! Sorry. xD I'll look at it in a minute.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo 2-day sleep is awesome, Helene Wiinholt, I wish I can do that :P
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt "Han er kæphøj og ER skvadder.
HVOR det end MED bringe
Dertil hedder det SAGT at bønder HøDDER/HøRTE bønner."
I can say that all the capitalized words are unfortunately wrong.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Come to think about it, I didn't hear "hvor", or anything at all at the beginning of "HVOR det end MED bringe"... Was the "hvor" inserted by missedsteak...?
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt No, there is indeed a 'hv' word at the beginning of that sentence. 'Hv' words equal to 'who, where, what' etc,in English.
___ det end ____ __ bringe, bukker vi ikke under.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo I would have passed that as breathing! :O
The butter cookies are waaaaay easier to digest than Danish audio round... :P
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Concerning the first sentence then 'It was cheapest for the poor driver to' is correct, but in this one 'havelågen' doesn't mean garden gate, it's slang for something else. *Being an evil Dane*
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Ordbok and occam's razor say it's hashtag.
http://ordnet.dk/ddo/ordbog?query=havel%C3%A5gen

If wrong, I will look into the 2nd/slang entry :P
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt It's not hashtag, but the meaning can indeed be found on that page. :)

Arief Wibowo My current workflow:

Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Does it mean… old bike in disrepair? :o
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Hmpf, slang for "old bicycle in bad/poor stand"... Not helpful
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt It is correct though. In this context it's just an old city bike. We have lots of those here.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo A haaaaaa, should've remembered a strip from http://satwcomic.com/

First sentence, stjälcuried from Vincensiu Dionisiu, is therefore:
It was cheapest for the poor driver to pop home on an old city bike.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Come to think about it, old city bikes sort of look like a garden gate...
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'd say the sentences is correctly translated, great job. xD
Often Danes have more than one bike each. I my family we're four and we maybe have ten bikes or so (which are regularly used).
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Yaaay! First real progress!

The (rich) family next to my parent's house in Indonesia has as many cars as your bikes... Our side of the earth is sad...

And on this side of the earth, "bike" almost always means "motorbike". We haven't adopted bicycle into daily life.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt I'd die of heatstroke if I tried to bike in Indonesia I think. ...Though I remember there not being an ice cream van, but an ice cream bike when I was there. xD
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Ice cream 3-wheel bikes (tricycles? trikes?) with noisy annoying chiptune, yes :D
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo "Han er kæphøj og ER skvadder."
Possible replacements for ER: der, det
(I heard some /d/-sound in my stretched version :P )
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Can't it be is?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo I'd be really scared of Danish if the "ER" turns out to be "is"...
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt My mom can still remember the tune... xD Damn catchy. And slightly creepy.
Helene Wiinholt

Sarah Karoline I'd been thinking "skvedder" is a Verb or adjective, so that's why I hadn't suggested "et". Aaargh too. :D

http://ordnet.dk/ddo
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo What would "et" mean...? :D
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt 'Et' is an indefinite article together with 'en'. Like 'a' and 'an' in English.
En flaske - a bottle
Et æble - an apple
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo He is arrogant and/but a fool?
--
I shall leave to dinner and to bed... Have a good day/night everybody!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt 'En' is used for common gender words (ca. 75% of nouns). 'Et' for neuter (ca. 25%)
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt He is arrogant and a fool. Jup.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo En Helene, Et Wiinholt, understood... :P
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Seeing as a name refers to a person, names are always common gender. :P

Arief Wibowo One of the major challenges in Sprogpspeletism :D
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt 'Kæmper' is still not correct. 'At kæmpe' does indeed mean 'to fight', but 'en kæmpe' does not mean 'a fighter'. It's a whole other word.
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt 'videre må bringe', remember the 'må'!
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt 'Therefore' would be 'derfor' in Danish. It's quite the same as English. So 'dertil' is therefore 'thereto'.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Christian any few contribution before you are swallowed by the darkness? My brain is still traumatised by work yesterday, and still not functioning properly
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Might I say, comparing the text to the recording, I find it fascinating how <ad> turns out. IPA says [æð] but it seems as if there's some form of pharyngealisation* going on (due to the stød?), and that the [æ] is actually an [E] - which messes with my English speaking expectations of the sound :D

Text:
Det var billigst for den flade bilist at smutte hjem på havelågen.

Vincensiu's T/L:
It was cheapest for the poor driver to pop home from garden gate
He is arrogant and fool.
Wild fighter would dwell in uninhabited land where in darkness of night, trembling shriek was heard
What it carry further, we not under
Therefore, it is said that farmers hate beans

My attempt:
It was cheapest for the poor motorist** to pop home on an rickety old bicycle***. He is haughty and a fool.
Wild giants wanted to dwell in uninhabited land where in the night's murkiness and dark a trembling shriek was heard.
What it nonetheless carries fruther, we do not (buoy?) under.
Thereto, 'tis said that farmers hate beans.

(not much different from Vincensiu's in the end)

*(Turns out it's "laryngealisation", which is done with the glottal folds only, but sounds similar to pharyngealisation in the way it distorts vowels)

**(casual sounding "bil" (from automobile) plus official sounding "-ist"? This is why I love Scandinavians)

***("gammel cykel i dårlig stand" - I'm guessing this means "old bicycle in in bad condition (standing)").
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Short version made to sound more "English":

It was cheapest for the poor motorist to pop home on a rickety old bicycle. He is haughty and a fool.
Wild giants preferred to dwell in uninhabitand land where in the night's murkiness and dark, a trembling would be heard.
(What it regardless carries further, we don't become attached to...?)
Thereto, 'tis said that farmers hate beans.

I'm lost :P

First of I did clear the first two sentences, Christian.
And remember the 'må'! xD 'videre må bringe'
'Wild giants __ dwell in uninhabited land where in the night's murkiness and dark a trembling shriek was heard.' I'd like another translation for 'angstskrig' though.
The second to last sentence is still far from there.
I'm gonna accept the last sentence. :)
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Shriek of anxiety/desperation

Må = may?
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Either that or 'terror', but, yes, Billy.
And 'må' is indeed 'may'. The small words are quite important in Danish since they can change the entire meaning of a sentence. :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter It was cheapest for the poor driver to pop home on an old city bike.
He is arrogant and a fool.
Wild giants was dwelling in uninhabited land where in darkness of night, shriek of terror was heard

Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Not 'was dwelling'. 'Ville' is the past tense of 'vil'.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I could recommend "den danske ordbog" for the missing words.... :D
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Also, again it's important with the short words. x'D If there's a 'en' or 'et' you need to use a/an in the translation.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter SK, I did use ddo, but since it's Danish - Danish, and not Danish - English, it's difficult for me to use them and I have to rely a bit on intuition....
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter OK, version 103

It was cheapest for the poor driver to pop home on an old city bike.
He is arrogant and a fool.
Wild giants WOULD dwell in uninhabited land where in darkness of night, shriek of terror was heard
What it may carry further in the end , we are not bent under
Thereto, it is said that farmers hate beans
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I wish I could find a Danish-English dictionary. The best I can find is this glossary:

He is arrogant and a fool.
Wild giants WOULD dwell in uninhabited land where in darkness of night, shriek of terror was heard
What it may BRING further in the end , we are not bent under
Thereto, it is said that farmers hate beans
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt In the long sentence you still miss a small word at the end. Small words are important. c:
The second to last sentence: 'further in the end' is a bit much? There's nothing about 'end' in the Danish version. You might even have to ignore the 'videre' to do a translation which makes sense.
The last part of that sentence shouldn't really be translated literally.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter if version 105 is still wrong, could you please do Andy's referencing style to make life easier for us :)

#105:
It was cheapest for the poor driver to pop home on an old city bike.
