Sarah Karoline I'm dedicating this round to Christian Adrian Vincensiu and Arief who helped me endlessly in the former round with transcription and hints. Enjoy the PIE!
Wrik Chatterjee I don't think PIE had /z/ at all. It had comparatively few fricatives save /s/ and h1, h2, and h3.
Sarah Karoline Sorry, "PIE" was a typing error. I meant "PGmc".
** "Ek" and "sangwaz" are PGmc.
* endi is Old Saxon.
The other words are Old ??

Sarah Karoline [The text is from a textbook, incidentally. I'm questioning the reliability of its spelling now...!]
Adrian Baxt-Dent Thus, it was; this was my SWEVEN.
Methought thus, that is was May
ENDI in the DAWENYNGE I lay
ENDI looked forth, for small birds making a melody
I was awakened through noise ENDI sweetness of her song.
Methought thus, that is was May
ENDI in the DAWENYNGE I lay
ENDI looked forth, for small birds making a melody
I was awakened through noise ENDI sweetness of her song.
Adrian Baxt-Dent Can't think of a word that fits. Unless May is a person's name, so maybe it is ";that she was May"
Or possibly, "That time was May."
Or possibly, "That time was May."
Sarah Karoline "That hyt was May" is correct!
It's just "hyt" isn't "is"...
It's a pronoun...
Hints...
DAWENYNGE is very much like modern English too. Cut some letters away...

Sarah Karoline I have just found a variety of translations for "swefan", one of which is "sleep". I think "dream" makes more sense in this context. A poem by Chaucer!
Sarah Karoline (Sorry, if I've not responded to every post! It's so hard to keep up in a fast round... Or I'm just slow )
So there's another spelling of "swevan" No wonder our spelling in the UK is so bad.... hahahaha

Sarah Karoline So, it seems Adrian was the first to write the text in full with the correct translation of "swefan", so I hereby declare Adrian the winner!
It's"svefn" (dream) in Old Norse too.
I don't remember enough about sound laws to know if swefan became schlafen.
