Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Yay!
We're now shifting from wise aphorisms to more prosaic lines. Something easy to keep the rounds coming:

"Ogni legittimo, buon astigiano
esce dall'utero col fiasco in mano.
Comincia a bere dal dì che nasce,
di vino imporpora le prime fasce."
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Here goes...

Every lawful, happy inhabitant of Asti comes out of the uterus with *a flask in his hand.
(* I'd change "col" to "with a" in English)

He starts to drink from the day of his birth, wine reddening his first *swaddling clothes/crib.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку And here's the correction. :)

Every lawful, [happy] (inhabitant of Asti) comes out of the uterus with a (flask) in (his) hand.
He starts to drink from the day of (his) birth, [...] wine reddening (his) first (swaddling clothes).

[] = wrong term/ a word missing
() = a better term could be used, even by means of a paraphrase.
Brad Wilson
Brad Wilson from Ditirambo (Scherzo Baccanale) ... the source I found has "comincia a bevere"
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Draft 2.

Every lawful, *true Astigiano comes out of the uterus with a *bottle in * hand.
He starts to drink a bottle of wine from *the day of birth, reddening *the first *swathes / bandages.

I may have been a little creative there....!
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger Buon=good?
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger WordReference is coming up with "swaddling bands" for "fasce."
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger The missing word is "with," I think.
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger Do you want something like "comes out of the uterus bottle-in-hand?"
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger Should "astigiano" be translated as "Astigian?"
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Brad Wilson: completely forgot about that. I know the first stanzas by heart, so I didn't think about checking first. "Bevere" is the old-fashioned form of "bere", so it's not a big deal anyway.
Sarah: yes, a wee bit creative. The word order was fine in your previous draft, now it's kind of messed up.
General corrections:
Buon = good --> yes.
Fasce = swaddling bands --> yes. Simply "bands" is fine.
Missing word = with --> yes.
Fiasco/flask/bottle --> I thought "flask" only referred to metal flasks, but I was wrong. Flask is fine.
Astigiano --> it's fine, I suppose. I was thinking about "Astesan", which doesn't even exist but it's kind of an English adaptation from the old fashioned "astesano/astense".
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Hopefully this isn't messy anymore!

Every lawful, good Astesan comes out of the uterus with a flask in hand.

(To me "flask" is something you pour hot tea or coffee into and the flask keeps it hot, but a "hip flask" is for alcohol.)

He starts to drink from the day of birth, (of) wine reddening his first *swaddling bands.

(To me "bands" sounds like the child is mummified :D Keeps it quiet, so a good idea!)

Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Fasce - nappy? Loincloth?
Brad Wilson
Brad Wilson fiasco is a large, round bottle, usually for wine
Brad Wilson
Brad Wilson Here is the entire poem (no translation) from Poesie di Francesco Morelli (1895) [see page 3] http://books.google.com/books?id=8o9GAQAAIAAJ&lpg=PR45&ots=8yJHYavdO6&dq=Ogni%20legittimo%2C%20buon%20astigiano&pg=PA3#v=onepage&q=Ogni%20legittimo,%20buon%20astigiano&f=false
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Sarah: only one word missing, it's not "of" but...
I advice you all to stjälcuri from Sarah, so we can be spared another Danish round.

Note: a fiasco is a somewhat outdated and nowadays quite expensive kind of bottle. When at restaurants always ask for a bottle and never ever accept wine from an opened fiasco. It's probably cheap loose wine (or even a mix of two wines) the owner just poured in.
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Every lawful, good Astesan comes out of the uterus with a flask in hand.

He starts to drink from the day of birth, *from wine reddening his first swaddling bands.

Aside from cooking with (the cheapest) wine (available), I'm tea-total, so I know nothing about wine.. hahaha :D
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Substitute 'from' to 'hence' maybe?
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger (I believe Дайте already confirmed that it's "with.")
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger Every lawful, good Astesan comes out of the uterus with a flask in hand.

He starts to drink from the day of his birth, with wine reddening his first bands (or "swaddling bands").
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I'd missed that :v
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку And we have a winner! Congratulations, Jake!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter New Round? New Round?
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger I've been working on something since I put forth that translation; I'll have it ready ASAP.
