Christian James Meredith Ok, this is less a translation job and more a research task, since I'll be offline soon:
What is the meaning behind "It giet oan!" (there's several answers to be had, one literal, one figurative, and one contextual)
What is the meaning behind "It giet oan!" (there's several answers to be had, one literal, one figurative, and one contextual)
Christian James Meredith Oh and "It giet oan" is West Frisian. Note you may wanna do some googling for this phrase, even if normally itd be cheating
Maleen Schlüter Christian, sure! i- is the prefix for 3rd person.
-nakkis- shows you that the root is NKS, and the two k show that it is either D-stem (but then, the prefix would not be i- but u-) or G-stem durative.
G-stem is the basic stem and durative might also be called present/future (of course, the Semitic tense/aspect system is different, so it is actually not applicable to use these terms, but let's just do it because otherwise this will turn into a book ;)).
And you have already figured out - ū : masculine plural

Christian James Meredith Yep, it's "it goes on", that's the literal meaning. Now just for the figurative English equivalent, and when in particular it's used (especially in the greater Netherlands). A hint on the last bit - you'll hear this during winter a lot more than any other time of year for a good reason
And whoops, OK, I see how it works now. I had assumed passive, but I forgot that you can drop pronouns. Interesting! I'll have to look at Akkadian more. It has a cool name

Maleen Schlüter I have a Dutch speaker next to me at the moment, so I couldn't resist the temptation... I am out until the next round.
Christian James Meredith I'm back! Maleen, that was the point though, just to research about it and first to report back wins
Christian James Meredith Arief Wibowo and Vincensiu Denis, here's a sort of dilapidated hint at the figurative English translation:

http://mrwgifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Its-Happening-Ron-Paul-Rave-Reaction-Gif.gif
Arief Wibowo See...... That further confirms that it's "it gets on" (like saying "the party is on!")
Christian James Meredith Arief Wibowo technically "giet" is cognate to English "goes" or "goeth", while "jit" is cognate to "gets" (forget = ferjitte).
But yes, that's closer to the figurative meaning! So, basically "it giet oan" = It's on! It's happening! It begins! etc.
So now, you have to find out what time this phrase will be used in the Netherlands, and why

Christian James Meredith "The sun will rise again" reminds me of the Japanese phrase "Hi wa mata noboru"
Christian James Meredith And just to remind you, you will want to use google for this one, otherwise it'll be impossibly hard. Or ask a Dutch person. Or ask a Dutch Google employee.
Arief Wibowo I am eager to pack dinner and watch a certain video from a certain technology, entertainment, and design conference... Reporting in shortly!
Christian James Meredith Arief Wibowo, no, that's a good idea. As long as she's been in the Netherlands since the 1760's.
Arief Wibowo I see... The Dutch Lady milk brand isn't as global as I thought

Christian James Meredith Vincensiu Denis you're on the right track! To help things go better, here's a list of things you need to find out:
- When people start saying this
- Why people start saying this
- What the name of the event is called
- What the event entails

Christian James Meredith Here's another hint picture giving some context:

Christian James Meredith Arief Wibowo, I've ne'er heard of that before! Whoops! I guess the Australian dairy industry is way too strong locally to allow much competitors!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Or maybe they are too afraid that they won't be able to beat Coles' $1/litre milk
Back to the game:
Could it be winter olympics?

Could it be winter olympics?
Christian James Meredith Nope, look at what Vincensiu found about ice skating
Seriously "it giet oan!" in Google for me gets the answer by the third suggestion

Christian James Meredith Winter olympics, not quite. This event doesn't happen quite as regularly. It also visits more cities, and there's only one real sport done there
Christian James Meredith I'll finish this off:
http://magazine.dutchancestrycoach.com/it-giet-oan-eleven-cities-fever
The Elfstedentocht is a race that happens whenever the ice gets thick enough in the Netherlands, particularly Friesland, so every winter everyone starts going "it giet oan!" as a sort of wish that the event will indeed happen.
Unfortunately, it doesn't happen quite that often after all

Arief Wibowo By the way, the video I mentioned earlier was "It giet oan: Henk Kroes at TEDxHaarlem" http://youtu.be/DQm3K95_FOM
Christian James Meredith Well, I don't mind, you both sorted it out (well, Maleen did too apparently as well )
Arief Wibowo Then using the "rule" about who hasn't won in the longest time, I award the title to Vincensiu Denis
Christian James Meredith We should probably codify this list of ad-hoc rules in the next thread that'll no doubt be starting soon!
Arief Wibowo Which, according to another uncodified ad-hoc rule, states that we shall start the new thread in 126 comments after this one (1K comments)
But well, let's not spook the newcomers with rules

Arief Wibowo Btw, now that I think of it, you might not get the earlier joke where I said something about "Frisian Flag", which is another milk brand under same company http://frisianflag.com/
Arief Wibowo All united under FrieslandCampina, a Dutch company http://www.frieslandcampina.com/english/merken-en-producten/brands.aspx
