Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter After been awake for 16 hours, and providing 10 hours of physcial services to my clients, I doubt my brain can work this Russian sounding recording out.
I guess I have to wait until the sun in Wales rises again and replenishes my energy.
Until then, I shall proceed to my dreamland through my fluffy boat and soft pillows as its oar.

The Eastern sprogspellers hopefully can contribute better.
Christian Arief Kevin Edmund Adrian
#getitreadysoIcanstjalcuri
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong WHAT? :O understanding spoken language require a significant level of proficiency in the language.

I've no idea where to begin
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo The audio recording has been immortalized in http://sprogspelet.arwi.im/help/round-186/

I think I heard "zabna" or "zapna" or "xabna" or "xapna" (not sure if it's part of a word or not).

I found "zabna" in Lojban meaning favorable.
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/zabna

This round deserves a "Matteo Cheri's Evil Award"!

And lastly, congratulations, Andy Ayres on being a resident. I see you've got yourself a neighborhood bronze medal in difficulty rating. :)

Unfortunately I am still work-bound, and must therefore disappear into darkness again.

Did you know?
... that you can safely click on [Unfollow post] (to stop Facebook notifications) and follow the game from http://sprogspelet.arwi.im/live/ ? :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline First of all I realise I forgot to send two congratulations cards yesterday: One to Andy for winning my round and for gaining a Bronze Medal in SpS, One to Дайте .
Here is a song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN4cSu45HXI

Here is the Gatto Cattivo Award for Dajte for the most Evil Idea but Excellent idea of a vocal round...

I am away today. I've heard the recording a few times, and it sounds "Slavic"... Here is what I hear.... I can't make a word out of it, so I imagine I'm not hearing words, but sounds...

"Лоха то што-а бијеки запнја- медјен. Вол- поће-покус...."
? it what?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter

This is what I heard

but first of all: WHAT LANGUAGE IS THAT??
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong someone says it's Russian
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Sarah, does it sounds SerboCroatian to you??
If it is, the last word should mean "try"
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Не знам! I don't know :)
I t h i n k I would rule out Polish, Czech, Slovak, Slovene, Serbian..... I'm really unsure!!! I heard Serbian for three weeks not so long ago, so if it's Serbian I was hoping I'd recognise words and the tone.

p.s. my listening skills in Slavic languages are weak!
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong I searched Дайте's wall. there's a post in Serbian.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Edmund, it won't help lol
It can be any language.
I don't speak Tagalog, but since I got few Filipino friends, I can always make a Tagalog round or post some Tagalog phrases on my wall.
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong at least now we know it may be Serbian.
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong this is hard
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres This round is nigh on impossible for me, because I am quite deaf and find it difficult enough to understand my own languages being spoken sometimes (by sometimes, read every day) :o. I've played this through about 50 times, and have made monumental progress :p - the first word. It sounds to me like it is /blɔxa/, "блоха" (flea in Russian and Ukrainian.)

This text definitely doesn't sound Polish, and the lack of vowel reduction makes me personally feel like ruling out Russian, but I'm probably the last person to take your word from!

P.S. Thanks for the congrats, Arief and Sarah
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I have heard to-shto before. But where????

Maybe t.A.T.u songs or ESC entry...
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Andy I even didn't send one for you :(
But I guess you have got at least 3 of my congratulation cards with the same pic :)

I do believe that it is Russian due to the prevalence of the "ñi" sounds
Ye stalked me, Edmund? Where did ya find a Serbian post on me wall?
For now, you almost got the following: "Лоха то што". Although you need to add a letter to the first and substitute another in the third.
Finally, you can safely rule out all the languages listed by Sarah. Keep going!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "To je" is almost pan Slavic for "it is."
Što - what (Serbian-Croatian)
I really wish I could stay and play this, but I have to go out :(
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres No worries, Vincensiu :)! As for to shto, I'm not sure, but I've heard of что-то (something)
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres My guess -
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong that's the most reasonable thing to do ,Дайте. I'm not your FB Friend so what I can see on your wall is little.
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong is't decided that it is Serbian?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Dajte has just confirmed it's not Serbian or the other languages I mentioned. I think, emphasis, think it's an East Slavic language based on the intonation and sounds I hear....I could be completely wrong!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Version 2 ......
Дайте Нефть Из Баку To что is indeed correct. The first is almost there, only you keep hearing /b/ when it's actually...
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Is it actually an unaspirated voiceless consonant?
By the way, Edmund, I think you got wrong a couple of languages on my wall. There's no Serbian whatsoever, although the language of the recording is there all right.
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong is't 'g'?
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Andy got it right: "Плохo то что". To make things a bit easier, yep, it's Russian. Now you know which sound patterns to follow.
If no progress has been made by 6.00 p.m. (GMT +1) I'll provide a clearer recording - at least I hope to.
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres By the way folks, at a loose end last night, I put this together - a little memento of an enjoyable month of sprogspelling :D

https://db.tt/MSDdU5i7
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Wow, I can't even see David's wall, the only things I can see is just some colourful pictures

btw,
што = what/why/as in SerboCroatian
то = then

то-што might means: Then - why??
Edmund Yong
Edmund Yong I heard tosh toch
two different words? I have no experience with russian.
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Плохo то что - The bad (thing?) is that
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Victor Maybe it's the time for you to shine
Дайте Нефть Из Баку "Плохo то что - The bad (thing?) is that" Correct! :)
I'm switching off for a couple of hours - still got an exam to study for. Read you later!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I'll be offline for the day now, unfortunately :( Good Luck to all Sprogspelares :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter third word:
P.s.: I missed it before, but "zapna" is indeed part of a word, Arief.
P.p.s.: beware Piedmontese speech patterns! Some vowels are a bit more open than intended.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter That's Russian enough for me David!!
I even thought you use software created voice to reach the 100% Russian accuracy
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Andy Ayres, nice journal!!!
I am planning to show the round's language in the website, so it would be very helpful if you can help me note down what is each round's language :)

(no rush though, I am still striving to complete my other projects...)

I actually played the audio by my friend from Kazakhstan (just for identification, not answer!), and got "the 1st part is Russian, the 2nd part is not" :P

Let me recommend this round to Russian learner Roy Zhao Yong :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter I'm pretty sure the second part is SerboCroatian!!
The last word is Pokus (try)
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Glad you like it, Arief, and I'd be happy to help you with that :)
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres It's probably unlikely, but do I hear "заб нас" (kill us, if zab is related to zabít/zabijac'?)
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres But Dajte does say that there's only one language, so it must be all Russian. In that case, am I hearing внезапно (suddenly, sudden, abrupt?) and the s belongs to another word?

Could the final two words be "чeм фокус" (instead of the focus/trick?)
Your hearing's better than what you think. Both your guesses are correct.
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres I wish that were true, but this was after a few hundred repeated listens, with many pauses :p. Glad to hear that though!

Really puzzled by the fourth (and fifth?) word. Sounds like ча мекли, but this makes no sense :)
Vincensiu:
"чябекиня??
The correct subdivision is "чябек иня". ;)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter but чябек doesn't mean anything, I tried to google чябек and there's only 2 result which seems like Gibberish. It doesn't even look like a name.

човек in other had means man in Bulgarian/SerboCroat
Loanwords maybe??
I said the subdivision's correct, not the transcription. :D
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter If my hearing is reliable, I guess the second part is:
вот в чeм фокус

combining with Andy's work:
Here is the focus
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres I've just come back from a nervewrecking afternoon stuck at the hospital. During the interminable wait, I listened to this recording ad nauseam and consulting my dictionary in an attempt to kill two birds with one stone by deciphering it and distracting myself :p.

"Плохо то, что човек(chelovek??) иногда внезапно смертен, вот в чем фокус."

The bad thing is that man sometimes suddenly dies; that's the trick/focus.
Well, what do you know! Looks like bad hearing makes you good at spotting Russian words. It must mean something.
You only need to solve the ambiguity of "man" and "trick/focus" and you're done!
(You or anyone else. Stjälcuri is valid until the round is up.)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter .
фокус = scary things/ scary part
човек = human
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres The bad thing is that humans sometime suddenly die; that's the trick?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua I support Andy's proposal. And hello again, everyone!
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres It's obsessive-compulsiveness, not bad hearing, that makes me good at this game :). I really am very hard of hearing, and it took hundreds of repeats just to get each word!
Warning: whoever wins must carry the burden of innovation along with them and is obliged to offer at least another vocal recording round.
Think of it as a present-day Sprogspelare pharaon curse.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Aaand we have a winner! Congrats, Andy!
Here's the original sentence from Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita:
"Да, человек смертен, но это было бы ещё полбеды. Плохо то, что он иногда внезапно смертен, вот в чём фокус!"
"Yes, humans are mortal, but that would be only half the trouble. The bad thing is that sometimes they are suddenly mortal - there's the trick!"
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres I can't believe it :D. This was a fun challenge. Luckily borderline crazy perseverance trumped having cloth ears. Now to think of what the next challenge should be :)
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua I'll be waiting, mwahahahaha
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Andy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AteCdXvZOZc [What's next... ]
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Andy Ayres I made you a new one which is more suitable with the current event
