Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee And here's Round 237, which thankfully is not an ugly prime number. Since the majority wanted Dravidian, I give you Dravidian:

மரண தண்டனை பயனற்றது மட்டுமல்ல, அது நிச்சயம் தீங்கு விளைவிக்கக் கூடியதாகவும் இருக்கிறது.

And if you have trouble telling apart Dravidian-language scripts, this is one that has a notable chauvinist community whom we make fun of a lot here on the Omniglot Fan Club. This sentence, in fact, is from one of my favorite writers in translation.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee I guess I'll use my Northeast Caucasian sample in my next round.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Looks like Tamil. Sadly I can't play now. Got something to do, and then bed soon :(
Ed Blankenship
Ed Blankenship I have to make a video for my Youtube channels... but I'll come back to this after that.
In the meantime, I'm gonna say this is Tamil (judging by the script).
Murilo Ricci
Murilo Ricci Do we have another language using Tamil script?
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Indeed there are some smaller South Dravidian languages spoken around the Nilgiri Mountains, like Badaga, Irula, or Kanikkaran, that are sometimes written with the Tamil script; this isn't one of them. As Eddie would probably say, this is actually Tamil in actual Tamil. I'm not that evil yet.
Ed Blankenship
Ed Blankenship Hahahahaha thank you
Ed Blankenship
Ed Blankenship So I know we said in another round that transliteration isn't super important, but it helps me especially once I get to grammar and I'm just staring at paradigms.... so... this is what I have:

Maraṇa taṇ ṭaṉai payaṉaṟṟatu maṭ ṭumlla, atu nik kayam tī ṅ ku viḷaivik kak kūtiyatātavum iruk kiṟaku.

I'm not 100% sure of the word divisions... I may have added some....
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin word by word: Death(penalty?) penal code(cipher?) மட்டுமல்ல, [it, that] [assurance, definitely] [evil, harm, disservice, disadvantage] விளைவிக்கக் கூடி(co-something? i.e. co-habitance, brotherhood, unity, something together?)யதாகவும் [exist, is]
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Rumba nandri, Wrik Chatterjee, having that said, I shall go to my favorite Malaysianized-Tamil restaurant for breakfast ;)
Zev Brȹk
Zev Brȹk This is the best Tamil dictionary out of those I linked Wrik to. I don't really have time to compete now, though.

Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Eddie, your transcription is almost there; you just broke apart some of the words. The second is taṇṭaṉai, third maṭṭumalla, fourth nikkayam, next viḷaivikkak, and last irukkiṟatu. I think you got kūṭiyatākavum right.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Thatcher, you have most of the words glossed almost right. There should be a copula in the first part in English. "Death penalty" is spot on, "definitely" is close enough that I'll give it to you, same with "evil." It starts to come apart in the next clause; you have the verb right at the end but not the rest.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter மரண தண்டனை = Death penalty
பயனற்றது = announcement
மட்டுமல்ல =not only,
அது= it
நிச்சயம் = surely
editting... my chrome keep crashing
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Almost there, but பயனற்றது isn't "announcement." Everything else is pretty much there.
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven struggle?
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee That's a little closer, but still not quite there. Here's a hint-it's an adjective. Sort of.
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin how can something be sort of an adjective lol
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee In that it's an adjective, but it carries the missing copula with it for the first clause.
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Ah
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Ok, so I got :பயனற்ற= worthless person,
and I get that து= neuter verb marker, but I still can't link them together :(

தீங்கு = evil/ mischief
விளைவிக்கக் =
கூடியதாகவும் =
இருக்கிறது =
Sreenivas Sudarshan Seshadri
Sreenivas Sudarshan Seshadri பயனற்ற- useless and it is incomplete without an ending or a noun
Sreenivas Sudarshan Seshadri
Sreenivas Sudarshan Seshadri Vincensiu Dionisiu If you know Japanese sentence pattern and Grammar, you can easily crack it.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Thanks Sreenivas, but unfortunately I don't speak Japanese :(
Ok rough translation:
Death penalty is not only useless, (but) it surely evil and make disgusting exist
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee That's very, very close. Remember that Tamil doesn't have articles to distinguish definiteness, and some of the stuff at the end is superfluous
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee And that it would take on another meaning.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Wrik, can we have Andy's referencing style? to distinguish the correct and incorrect translation?
I woke up too early and thinking about going to bed again :p
so will recheck before I go to work.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Sure, where [ ]=wrong and ( )=close. Death penalty is not only useless (word missing), but it surely evil (and make disgusting exist) (word missing).
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Brings misery for "make disgusting exist"?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Death penalty is not only useless thing, but it surely evil and bring misery in.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Death penalty is not only useless [thing], but it surely evil and (bring misery in). You've forgotten a couple words, especially at the beginnings of clauses, and you're a little superfluous towards the end.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter No, the game hasn't died yet. It's just me snowed under work...
But I'm free all day today and shall contribute more into it in few hours.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith I'm doing database sprogspelet! ("Here's specifications for a database, make a model out of it!")
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Death penalty is not only a useless act, but it surely evil and also bad.
Sreenivas Sudarshan Seshadri
Sreenivas Sudarshan Seshadri Vincensiu Dionisiu You are the winner of this Round.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Yeah, I think that's good enough for the win. Nice job, Vincensiu!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Thanks guys! :D
I wonder how the actual translation should be?
Also I'm in a dilemma :P
Since it seems like we are having low number of participants at the moment, I'm thinking about lowing the rating down, but if the round is too easy, many people would stay away as well...
