Round 279

Round

Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Ok, new round! :) This should be relatively simple for the Germanic fans here.

Yn dizze nacht binne Jo my nei,
In nacht sa frjemd en fredich.
In glimke fan in nije tiid
dat bin ik no sa nedich
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith I thought I'd be excluded by this round too but it's like the Middle English round again!

"In this night you are beside me,
A night so fremd and [scary].
A glimpse of a new time,
that am I now so needy".

There's gotta be a better word than "scary". That said, I feel like that's what it should be like, even though the dictionary says freed = friday.

I'm also on the edge with nedich. I don't know if other Germanic dialects beyond English can do this. Dutch nodig = needed, necessary. So perhaps there's that to consider.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In this night with you by my side
In a night so strange and scary
A glimpse of a new time
Then I am not so needy
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar I had some minor alterations that I wanted to make :)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Was I right? :D
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Andy's liking from afar but hasn't said anything yet! Uh oh...
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Christian's
In this night you are beside me,
A night so fremd and [scary].
A glimpse of a new time,
that ({am I now so needy})

Rolf's
In this night with you by my side
[In] a night so strange and [scary]
A glimpse of a new time
[Then] {I am [not] so needy}

For those who haven't seen the Andy correction style® yet, [] = totally incorrect, {} = incorrect but in the ballpark, () = wrong positioning
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Oh dear I just found out what I did wrong (I mean, on two levels).

"In this night you are beside me,
A night so fremd and peaceful. <<<<
A glimpse of a new time,
that am I now so needed."

I wanted to say "needful" haha. "I AM SO NEEDFUL, MINE LADY, LIKE AN NEWABORNE ENFANT. NOU MARRY ME."
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
I am not so low
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Rolf did you just drop the bass? :D
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Hahahhaha
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Well, nedich could be needy or low as in "nether" :D
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar fredich is like german "Friede" which is peace :)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar I was stressing, because I realised it could be peace, but my computer was hanging! I was scared you were gonna get it before me :D
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Haha, I just realised, sorry for pulling us off course with that "scary".
Must say something about my inner subconscious... :-/
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar No worries. But you never translated "fremd" xD
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Fremd's a word in English :D
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar It is? What does it mean?
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Getting closer!

Christian:
In this night you are beside me,
A night so fremd and peaceful.
A glimpse of a new time,
that ({am I now so needed.)}

Rolf:
In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
... I am [not so low]

Fredich is indeed a relative of Dutch vredig, German friedlich. Nedich has naught to do with low, which is usually "leech" in Frisian.
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Fremd is a dialectical word for strange.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith (Not dialectal Australian mind you. I just picked it up when I attempt to learn Scots. Not that I speak that either, coz I'm lazy)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
I am now so needy
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Don't forget the "that" :O
@Andy, you not liking my word order or is it the words themselves?
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
... (missing word) I ({am now so needy})

That last sentence has the potential to cause trouble, because it doesn't work like Dutch works in one important way ;)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Hmmmm
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres It's both word order () and the words themselves {} mate.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
Therefore I am now wanting
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Getting colder, I'm afraid, Rolf. Some knowledge of Northern Dutch dialectical divergences is helpful for the last line - a hint, what would be an irregular phrasing in Algemeen Nederlands is the standard phrasing in Frisian.
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Calling Sarah Billy Wrik Jake Sally Arief Ed etc to the party :p
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Well, I speak English, German and Afrikaans. I am trying to think of all the cognates I can remember
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
Therefore I am now needful
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Does it mean "needful"? I don't know Dutch or Frisian :(
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Oh bugger, I reckon I figured it out
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
[Therefore] {(I am now needful)}

It's got something to do with need/needing, but I wouldn't translate it thus
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
Therefore I am now in need
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Just gonna keep trying variations on "need" :D
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres It's not therefore. You're getting warmer with the rest of the last sentence, though! :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter My whole body is itchy now.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Is benodigen (which I'm pronouncing bəˈnʌʊdəx̠ə for some reason :P ) in the right direction?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith So that'd make Sally's submission:
"In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
My whole body is itchy now"
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
Means I am now in need
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith No man keep the "that" intact
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres I think so, take a shot with it in English, Christian! The last sentence is relatively simple... it needs the that indeed
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
That means I am now in need
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith I had a round not long ago and Rolf looks like he'll explode if he has to wait too long :D
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Something like that?
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar "That I am now in need" doesn't seem to really work in English
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres I'm on for a couple more minutes, then I'll be unavailable for an hour because I have to give my first class. The last sentence is much simpler than that ;)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar ok
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Hopefully one of youse gets it before I go ;)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
That I am now in need
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar I can't think of any other variation than that
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
That's what I need now
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ooooh going in for the stjälcuri!
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Sally, you're very, very close, but no cigar (yet)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In this night with you by my side
A night so strange and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
That's what I need right now
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter The classic NSIH :)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith In this night with you by my side
A night so fremd and peaceful
A glimpse of a new time
That I now need.
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Winner, winner, chicken dinner, Christian ^^. Frisian has ik ben nedich/noadich, like some North Hollandish has ik bin nodig instead of the standard ik heb nodig.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Well done!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar So close :)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Well, I learned something :)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar I was confused by the "bin" :)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Huh, I would've pegged ik bin nodig for standard.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In german, you say "Ich benotige das"
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Ik heb je nodig = I need you
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar What languages was that? North Dutch?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Yeah, that's what I would've expected first, "be-need-y" as a verb.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Very cool, though :) Finally a spraakspelet I can participate in :)
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Ik heb nodig = Standard Dutch
Ik ben nodig = some Northern Dutch
Ik bin noadich/nedich = Frisian :)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Every now and again we have germanic seasons :P
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Now I have to think of something evil.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith When was the last time we had Finnish? Otherwise I have an eviler idea but... actually it'll take me the same time to prepare.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar I could come up with some nasty stuff xD
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres I am intrigued! ;)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I've missed the round ..
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt *Raises hand* Finnish would be appreciated though
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt Just a heads up. Don't let me win, I do evil Danish rounds.
