Round 280

Round

Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Rondo#280.
Ok, took me a while but I think it's suitably evil now. It crosses genres, canons, tenses, even languages!

In middeleorþan þǣr earon ylfe. Ylfe earon ne ġelīċ mannum ond dweorgum, forðǣm earon þā hīerra. Tō hatian ylfe orcas eallswā (Earman orcas, þā earon swā sǣliġe). Ylfe wǣron ġesundrode þurh þǣm godu intō twā þēodum.

Mutta haltiat ovat säälittäviä. Ne ovat torjunut Keisari, *ihmiskunnan Keisari*! Kostamme kunniaamme niille xenoille, roskaa! Taistelkaa voitosta! Taistelkaa ihmiskunnasta! Hinnalla millä hyvänsä, taistelkaa Jumalakeisarista!

-------

Luckily, both use quite a lot of repetition. The second though might have errors coz I'm not sure I nailed down the finer delicate parts of the grammar and style. I also had to translate a particular style of speech normally stuck in English!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Helene, Sarah, Billy, Edmund since you like Old English, maybe Victor if I didn't overload him with my essay before :D, who else likes these two languages?
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I'm actually reading your essay right now xD
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Okay, Victor's gonna be occupied for the week it seems :P
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I'd love to participate, but unfortunately I need to get back to my mathematical proofs when I'm done with the essay.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Haha! By all means don't feel burdened to read it if you have other work to do :P
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I'm taking a break^^ it's very different to what I normally have to write.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Oh Victor, that makes Sally sad...
you always bring a warm atmosphere when you are in the game.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Also, Tolkien would approve of this round.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar First part is probably, "In middle earth there are elves" :)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström "Warm" as in heated, wrathful and on the verge of fury? xD
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith "In middle earth there are elves" = Correct! How could you guess?! :D

He might approve of the language choices but content wise only up to a point ;-)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Actually I didn't know the correct expression in English so I just randomly choose "warm".
What I meant was your participation in the round, either as a host or as a player always make the round more interesting and sometimes funny too :)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I have no idea what the Finnish is saying so I'll take your word on that. There are a few words in the first part I can't identify though!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I'll have to come back at some point. I miss the game :(
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Can we use online dictionaries?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Yes, online dictionary is allowed.
What's not allowed is Google Translate or similar software/ website that can translate the whole phrases into English
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Yep! Online dictionaries are allowed, but *not* translators like Google translate.

Normally when encountering a significantly new language, a Sprogspeler will find a couple of dictionaries on the web, open up the Wikipedia page for the language's grammar and start deciphering :D
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Oh ok. Got it!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Is this the first bit (I know a bit of Old English)

In middle earth there are Elves. Elves are not like men or dwarves for they are lords. And the elves hate orcs (wretched orcs, they are very happy). Elves were separated from the gods into two kingdoms
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Close!
or: nay
lords: nay

And, in "and the elves hate": nay, but close. It's definitely a word that adds on a new fact. You also skipped eallswā.

wretched: sorta right. Not so harsh though.

happy: In this context, it's not something for them to be happy about :P

Kingdoms: context is a bit off once again but good enough, I'll accept that.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In middle earth there are Elves. Elves are neither like men nor like dwarves for they are immortal. And the elves also dislike orcs (miserable orcs, they are very unhappy). Elves were separated from the gods into two kingdoms
Helene Wiinholt
Helene Wiinholt And just when I have to cook!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Hahaha
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Immortal's less correct. Think more about stature.
"And the elves also dislike orcs" I'll have to accept this I think. The actual idea was something like "Also, the elves hate orcs as well" (Also = new fact, as well = just like the other guys).

Neither/nor is wrong. There's a negative, but the "or" part is wrong.

Miserable is technically correct, yes. I was looking for "poor" but "miserable" works too.

Here's a hint for sǣlige: its Finnish equivalent is in this sentence: "Mutta hatiat ovat säälittäviä"
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar In middle earth there are Elves. Elves are neither like men or like dwarves for they are tall. And the elves also dislike orcs (miserable orcs, they are very pitiful). Elves were separated from the gods into two kingdoms
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Pitiful = yep!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith You still need to get rid of "neither/nor", and replace it with a negative and another conjunction.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar I edited it to "or" is that right?
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Here is my (maybe terrible) attempt at translating the finnish
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar But they are pitiful. They defend their emperor, "Mankind, Emperor"! We avenge and gain our glory against this trash! We fight for glory! We fight for mankind, whatever the cost, we fight for the god emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Or is it

In middle earth there are Elves. Elves are not like men and dwarves for they are tall. And the elves also dislike orcs (miserable orcs, they are very pitiful). Elves were separated from the gods into two kingdoms
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith No, the "or" is wrong, there's no "or" in the Old English (or = oþþe)

Now for the Finnish! I'll use ==, ~~, =/= and ~/~, if that's OK with people (== equals, ~~ like, =/= not, ~/~ not reaally)

- Hatiat =/= they
- ovat torjunut means "defend" only in a certain context, and I don't think it means "defend" transitively (Finnish valency is crazy like that, one second a word's transitive, the other second it's intransitive). Also, the tense is wrong
- the *___* here are used for emphasis due to the lack of italics/bold formatting in Facebook, sorry for the confusion!
- ihmiskunnan keisari ~/~ mankind, emperor. Right words, wrong relationship.
- Kostamme == we avenge. The rest is mostly wrong ("our glory" is right, I was thinking "our honour") but the right mood ;-)

The rest including and after Taistelkaa ihmiskunnasta is correct (although you need a "!" after "mankind").

Good work!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Anyone notice what the Finnish is a reference too, BTW?
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Why did you have to include two languages xD
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar So is the old english

In middle earth there are Elves. Elves are not like men and dwarves for they are tall. And the elves also dislike orcs (miserable orcs, they are very pitiful). Elves were separated from the gods into two kingdoms
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith As for the Old English, that's correct except for "from the gods". I missed that, sorry! You can translate that final OE sentence easily by using a standard transitive passive sentence structure in English.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Oh, and "tall" is missing a suffix.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar is it "Elves were separated by the gods into two kingdoms"?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Yep :D
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Ok :) Onto the finnish! Phew!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Don't forget "tall"s suffix!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar I guess all my germanic has helped me with the OE :)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar So is the final OE

In middle earth there are Elves. Elves are not like men and dwarves for they are taller. And the elves also dislike orcs (miserable orcs, they are very pitiful). Elves were separated by the gods into two kingdoms
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Cool :)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Yep, this is what I had recorded in Notepad:
"In middeleorþan þǣr earon ylfe. Ylfe earon ne ġelīċ mannum ond dweorgum, forðǣm earon þā hīerra. Tō hatian ylfe orcas eallswā (Earman orcas, þā earon swā sǣliġe). Ylfe wǣron ġesundrode þurh þǣm godu intō twā þēodum."

"In middleearth (dat) there are elves. Elves are not like men (dat) and dwarves, because they are taller. Also, they hate orcs as well (Poor orcs, they are so pitiful). Elves were sundered by the gods (acc) into two peoples (dat)."

(The stuff in brackets are so I remember the cases!)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ok, have fun with the Finnish while I do fun things like sleep.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar ok
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Have a good sleep
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Ok, this might be it

But they are weak and pitiful. They are defenders of the emperor! We avenge our honour against the aliens, trash! We fight for victory! We fight for mankind! Whatever the cost, we fight for the god emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar So put together it is

In middle earth there are Elves. Elves are neither like men nor like dwarves for they are tall. And the elves also dislike orcs (miserable orcs, they are very pitiful). Elves were separated from the gods into two kingdoms

But they are weak and pitiful. They are defenders of the emperor! We avenge our honour against the aliens, trash! We fight for victory! We fight for mankind! Whatever the cost, we fight for the god emperor!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter by the time CJM wakes up, Rolf would b sleeping :p
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Here's my attempt. The ellative in that last sentence is confusing me a bit! I can't find hatiat in my dictionaries either, unfortunately.

In Middle Earth, there are elves. Elves are not like men and dwarves, because they are taller. Also, they hate orcs as well; (poor orcs, they are so pitiful.) Elves were separated by the Gods into two peoples.

But they are pitiful. They are scorned by the emperor, the emperor of mankind! We avenge our honour against Xeno(i), rubbish! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the God emperor!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ah, I typo'd! This is what I get for trying to make stuff up on the spot rather than having a list of poems and songs earmarked for SPS rounds :P

*Haltiat.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Ah, that helps :D
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Yeah, should be easier now.
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Yeah, a letter can make all the difference sometimes :)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar But the orcs are pitiful. They are defenders of the emperor! We avenge our honour against the aliens, trash! We fight for victory! We fight for mankind! Whatever the cost, we fight for the god emperor!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith @Ruth Sudbeck, that's ok! It's probably better, coz it means you'll be able to enjoy the game more when it's a language you don't know, but can still work out bits of!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Here's my next attempt :)

But the orcs are pitiful. They are scorned by the emperor! We avenge our honour against the aliens, trash! We fight for victory! We fight for mankind! Whatever the cost, we fight for the god emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar torjunut does seem to have some negative connotation, or a defensive connotation, such as anti air missiles in one compound :)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith So, time to review the Finnish. Firstly, some notes:
- I accidently marked a bit of Rolf's as right when it wasn't that correct. This is because I had a previous version of the translation I was thinking of, where I used the first person plural imperative, and then changed to the second person plural imperative later. So we'll say he was "right" then even I made an error. From now on though, ANDY's translation for the imperatives (-kaa) is the *correct* one. (the first person plural imperative uses -kaamme, for anyone interested).

I'll use Andy's [] = wrong, {} = close notation.. {{}} = very close notation

RUTH
"they scorned the emperor" = GOOD
" maybe "the emperor of mankind" = GOOD

ROLF
But [they] are [weak and] pitiful. They [are defenders of the emperor]! We avenge our honour against the {{aliens}}, trash*! [We fight for victory! We fight for mankind! Whatever the cost, we fight for the god emperor!]

ANDY
But [they] are pitiful. They {are scorned by the emperor}, the emperor of mankind! We avenge our honour against {{Xeno}}[(i)], rubbish*! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the God emperor!

*I'll just tell you what I was going for, as it's unfair since I'm not even sure it's a good translation: "the scum!".
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar But the orcs are pitiful. They are scorned by the emperor! We avenge our honour against the scum, trash! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the God emperor!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Now, haltiat and xenoille are the fun parts for y'all. xenoille's case has been more or less identified, the problem here is that this term is franchise-specific. So, to make it a bit harder, to win the Finnish round, you have to guess and say what franchise the challenge crosses into after the LotR bit ;-)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar But the orcs are pitiful. They are scorned by the emperor! We avenge our honour against the Xenos, trash! Fght for victory! Fight for mankind! No matter the cost, fight for the god emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Is that right?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith xenos is right, but what franchise? ;-)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Sorry, had to edit it to make sure it kept some of my corrections from the previous attempt
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Warhammer 40k
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Because they have a God Emperor :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter But we are pitiful. They are scorned by the emperor, the emperor of mankind! We avenge our honour against human, rubbish! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the God emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar So the whole thing is

In middle earth there are Elves. Elves are neither like men nor like dwarves for they are tall. And the elves also dislike orcs (miserable orcs, they are very pitiful). Elves were separated from the gods into two kingdoms

But the orcs are pitiful. They are scorned by the emperor! We avenge our honour against the Xenos, trash! Fight for victory! Fight for mankind! No matter the cost, fight for the god emperor!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith You've still got an error Rolf!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar But the orcs are pitiful. They are scorned by the emperor! We avenge our honour against the Xenos, scum! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the god emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar I changed "trash" to "scum" :)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith We is wrong Vince! We is "me" in Finnish!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith No, that's not the error! You added in a word but I didn't approve it, just earlier ;-)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Is it "humanity"?
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar But the orcs are pitiful. They are scorned by the emperor! We avenge our honour against Xenos, scum! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the god emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar I took out "the" before Xenos :)
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith No no, "the xenos" is ok. (Also, I noticed an error in Andy's I missed before). You need to go back to where I did the corrects and pay attention to some feedback there that you missed. Also note what you wrote then. Then trace each version that you did up until I said "You've still got an error Rolf!".

I'm being "ankara" now :D
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter It is Sally, you sexist!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar But the orcs are pitiful. They are insulted by the emperor! We avenge our honour against the Xenos, scum! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the god emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar How's that?
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar So many synonyms for torjuminem :(
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Well, going with the military theme I will change it to

But the orcs are pitiful. They are rebuffed by the emperor! We avenge our honour against the Xenos, scum! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the god emperor!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith No no, you've missed what someone else got right earlier. They did a good job translating two things! :)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Hmm. Ok, I will look
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Attempt 2:

In Middle Earth, there are elves. Elves are not like men and dwarves, because they are taller. Also, they hate orcs as well; (poor orcs, they are so pitiful.) Elves were separated by the Gods into two peoples.

But the elves are pitiful. They scorn the emperor, the emperor of mankind! We avenge our honour against the Xenos, the scum! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the God emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar But the orcs are pitiful. They scorned the emperor of mankind! We avenge our honour against the Xenos, scum! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the god emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Oh, it should be

But the orcs are pitiful. They scorned the emperor, the emperor of humanity! We avenge our honour against the Xenos, scum! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the god emperor!
Andy Ayres
Andy Ayres Attempt 3:
In Middle Earth, there are elves. Elves are not like men and dwarves, because they are taller. Also, they hate orcs as well; (poor orcs, they are so pitiful.) Elves were separated by the Gods into two peoples.

But the elves are pitiful. They scorned the emperor, the emperor of mankind! We avenge our honour against the Xenos, the scum! Fight for victory! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the God emperor!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Here is my version 1. I stjälcuried three words, the rest I found in the dictionary I couldn't find yesterday.

In Middle Earth there were elves. The elves were not like men and dwarves, for they were lords. The elves hate orcs too. (Miserable orcs, they were very pitiful.) The elves were divided by the Gods into two kingdoms.

But elves are pitiful. They defend the emperor, the emperor of mankind! We avenge our honour to the xenon, some part of the trash! Fight for victory! Fight for the emperor! No matter the cost, fight the *God emperor!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith I'm back after a lot of assignment drama, wind-down, and sleep!
Ok. Lemme give everything a read and make a verdict.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Turns out Andy wins!... with a minor caveat:
- I forgot that "scorned" was "have scorned" (but that's my fault)

Rolf, "orcs" was wrong, but the problem was you kept skipping over the bits I marked of Ruth's, and didn't slow down so you kept replacing correct words (like "elves"). But a lot of good work! :D
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith In recap, this is the text I gave, and this is my translation for it. Actual native speakers of Quenya and Finnish can complain to me later :P

In middeleorþan þǣr earon ylfe. Ylfe earon ne ġelīċ mannum ond dweorgum, forðǣm earon þā hīerra. Tō hatian ylfe orcas eallswā (Earman orcas, þā earon swā sǣliġe). Ylfe wǣron ġesundrode þurh þǣm godu intō twā þēodum.

Mutta hatiat ovat säälittäviä. Ne ovat torjunut Keisari, *ihmiskunnan Keisari*! Kostamme kunniaamme niille xenoille, roskaa! Taistelkaa voitosta! Taistelkaa ihmiskunnasta! Hinnalla millä hyvänsä, taistelkaa Jumalakeisarista!

(Translations with case notes:)
In middleearth (dat) there are elves. Elves are not like men (dat) and dwarves, because they are taller. Also, they hate orcs as well (Poor orcs, they are so pitiful). Elves were sundered by the gods (acc) into two peoples (dat).

FI
But the elves (LotRism) are pitiful (part). Those have shunned the Emperor, the Emperor of Mankind! We will get revenge for our honour (part) on those xenos (all), the scum! Fight for victory (ela)! Fight for humanity! No matter the cost, fight for the God-Emperor!
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Ok. I knew it has to be Orcs or Elves :) I read up about Xenos and it could refer to Orcs or Elves :)
Rolf Weimar
Rolf Weimar Damn. I suppose that's how it goes with Sprakspelet :) Maybe I was going to quickly. I didn't see the part where you marked "Elves" as correct in the Finnish version. That is why I changed it. Oh well. It was interesting trying to decipher a language I knew nothing about :)

Here are the notes I made

Mutta [but] haltiat [elves] ovat [are] säälittäviä [pathetic]. Ne [they] ovat [are] torjunut [defenders] Keisari [emperor], ihmiskunnan [humanity]Keisari [emperor]! Kostamme [avenge] kunniaamme [our honour] niille [them, to them] xenoille [aliens?], roskaa [trash]! Taistelkaa [fight] voitosta [victorious]! Taistelkaa [fight] ihmiskunnasta [humanity]! Hinnalla millä hyvänsä, taistelkaa Jumalakeisarista!
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Ah, interesting! You were very close! The biggest misunderstanding seems to've been the role of "torjunut" (does that mean "defenders" as well? Interesting!).

But yes, Sprogspelet is harsh (also, I was slowly upping the difficulty because I thought it would be too hard at first, then it turned out too easy if I helped too much!) :P But I find you learn a lot about checking for errors, consistency and collaboration from it I think haha.

That's why I don't like hosting rounds *too* much, coz I get just a little bit of show-off time and then the rest is me going "whoops, I made an error there, I told that person the wrong thing" etc.
