Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Alas, now for some impromptu Afrikaans, hopefully I didn't get it wrong (I'll run it by our resident Afrikaans speaker just in case)

Man's soos 'n piesang: wanneer hy uit die klomp vertrek, word hy afgestroop.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Man's [soos] ['n] banana: [wanneer] [hy] out the [klomp] [vertrek], word [hy] [afgestroop].

Yay, Afrikaans took Malay word "pisang" :D
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку [A] man's as (like) a banana: when he ...
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo vertrek is sounds very familiar, but I cannot recall the exact word we use in Indonesia...
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Haha, good first stab at it! "Word" isn't "word" though, although there *is* an English cognate (worth) but it's rare in that usage.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Klomp = clump?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Man's like a banana: when he out the [klomp] [vertrek], worth(?) he [afgestroop]
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Yep! Man's like a banana: when he out the clump (bunch) ....., .........
Zeke Kornberg
Zeke Kornberg wanneer hy uit die klump vertrek = when he goes out of the bunch?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo A ha, vertrek should be "atrek", reverse/depart
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Zeke Kornberg, hopefully! This is the part where my grammar knowledge is insufficient - I couldn't translate "leave the bunch" right.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Man's like a banana: when he departs the clump/bunch/gang, worth(?) he [afgestroop]
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Is the "af" in "afgestroop" anything similar to German "auf"?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Hmm... When banana leaves it's clump, it doesn't turn yellow/brown as fast as when it's together....... Now how do we turn this to guess afgestroop?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Arief Wibowo misalnya "ku beratrek dari sini" atau "ku mengatreki sini"?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith @ Dayte well... technically not (they're not cognates). It's actually equivalent to German "ab" (op = auf = up instead). However the usage may be the same.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Christian James Meredith, actually its only used by the tukang parkir (the guy who guards parking spots). When he says "atrek!", it means "reverse!"
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Arief ah ok, that's different to what I imagined! It must be a set phrase then?
Also, when tackling "afgestroop", you can divide it up as "af-ge-stroop". You can use the root word to figure out the meaning more easily.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Christian James Meredith: atrek atrek atrek kiri kiri stop kanan kanan stop atrek atrek :P
Zeke Kornberg
Zeke Kornberg "word hy afgestroop" - he goes bad?
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Taking a wild guess here: stroop = strip? When a man is alone he is deprived (?) of everything? As a banana loses its peel?
(I suppose. I don't eat bananas.)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo If my food memory serves, stroop is a kind of maple syrup

Man's like a banana: when he departs the clump/bunch/gang, he's worth/like a syrup?
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Or maybe: when a man is alone he rots away. :P
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Dayte's more or less got it, but you need to put it back into a sentence for the multiple meanings to work :P
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith The original language was English, I translated into Afrikaans coz otherwise there'd be no challenge 3:)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Man's like a banana: when he departs the clump/bunch/gang, he's loses his worth?
Zeke Kornberg
Zeke Kornberg That would come out: Man is like a banana, when he leaves the group he rots away.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку A man is like a banana: when he is out of the clump he is naked/ he goes bad (meaning he isn't worth anything anymore, like Arief said).
Zeke Kornberg
Zeke Kornberg I still don't understand what "word afgestroop" is exactly...
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo af- might mean off
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Maybe it means off the [stroop]
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Af-gestroop = stripped out?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Eh, you all sort of diverged again back there :P

Well, word ~ German werden, and Arief got "af". ge- is also like German.

Dayte was right when he got "strip", the meaning here is more about stripping something off than getting noody though ;-)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo And using my guess, it means off the syrup...
Hmm... In English, "off the" would come together with "hook"... Could it be:
when he departs the clump/bunch/gang, he's off the hook?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Nothing to do with syrup Arief :P
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Man's like a banana: when he departs the clump/bunch/gang, he's stripped off?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo (pardon me, I am due for afternoon snack :P )
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Arief Wibowo almost there, the last bit needs a bit of tweaking to make sense in the original English - think about what comes off a banana when you peel it, and think about what the verb is for when that happens to an animal, and you've got it.
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Word hy afgestroop = he gets flayed? :P
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Man's like a banana: when he departs the clump/bunch/gang, he's flayed? (oh no, I recall a sad scene in Buffy)
Zeke Kornberg
Zeke Kornberg So that would be: Man is like a banana, when he leaves the bunch he gets skinned?
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Yep, oy vey, now who to give the point to... I'll give the point to Zeke since he cleaned it up to its original English! (and coz Arief probably needs time to prepare another big challenge :P )

"Man is like a banana, when he leaves the bunch, he gets skinned".

There's many meanings, but the obvious one is the (morbid) joke :P
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Oh well, I just about to post the thesaurus entry for peel:
decorticate, delaminate, desquamate, excorticate, exfoliate, flake, flay, pare, pull off, scale, shave, skin, strip, tear off, uncover
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Haha Arief good ol thesauri! Now Zeke Kornberg, 'tis your duty to torment us with convoluted interlingual phrases!
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку You bananas behave or I'll flay you alive!
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo I am having bananas for afternoon snack :P
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Shhh, don't make threats on the internet, you can get in gaol for that! Next thing you know you'll be in banana prison surrounded by the worst bananas of the bunch! :P
