Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Let's go with this, a language from my continent. It's a sample sentence from a book I bought days ago. It was a treasure I got for only one euro xd. There's a loanwoard that might tell you a bit more about the "location" of this language....

And it's short :D

---> Ix xix c'oje' pa escuela najtir.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Escuela = school. Easy.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Aymara? :D
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner najtir = go?
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven I think I've got which language it is. Is it from somewhere near or in Guatemala?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Vincensiu Denis, exactly :p. Now the rest of the phrase!

Maria Weidner, nope, you're a bit far away from th area this language is actually spoken. Najtir =/= go.
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Billy..... Yes it is!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Quiché?
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Close, Kaqchikel I think
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven ix = you-abs? i.e. you object, you subject
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Ix = A type of you subject. But you haven't said whether its familiar or formal, singular or plural :p.

Maria Weidner, It is Quiché!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter isil language?
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Damn it, I was sure it was Kaqchikel Mayan :p
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven I meant :P plural absolutive (I write thou else)

ix = 2PL.ABS (or Set B as it's known)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner So sorry, I have to work no for an hour! Don't solve it! :p I'll be back soon! :D
Дайте Нефть Из Баку
Дайте Нефть Из Баку Oh boy, 300 posts already? What's the current sentence?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Дайте Нефть Из Баку... Ix xix c'oje' pa escuela najtir.
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Billy James Brightraven, You're right that's it. :D
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Damnit, it'll be over before I'm home from practice. :p
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven najtir = ancient/anciently

Ix xix c'oje' pa escuela najtir.
You xix c'oje' pa school ancient.
2pl.abs xix c'oje' pa school ancient.ADJ
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Billy James Brightraven, you're right about something. Najtir DOES refer to something in the past, and 'anciently' is a good way to translate it. But be careful... It may not be 'ancient' in the way you are thinking!
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven http://www.famsi.org/mayawriting/dictionary/christenson/quidic_complete.pdf

Someone have fun :p
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner In the dictionary are only words with "ch'" but not with "c'".. :/
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven c' = q' or k' I think :p
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner pa = to? to the school?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Not "to", but it does mean a concept related to "location".
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven by? i.e by the old school?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner in school?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua You're getting close but you're not there yet.

Btw,
I never said "old school" was right :p
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Previous!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner to, by, in.. at school?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I can't find the words nowhere..
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua 1. At school. Correct Maria Weidner.

2. Try to make it an adverb, Billy!
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven You xix c'oje' at the former school?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner -ix marcardor segunda persona plural... that's logical
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner is xix c'oje' ONE verb?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Technically it is. Xix is a particle used when conjugating to indicate a specific tense; c'o is the main verb root, and je' is a suffix used also for conjugation.

It's a compound verb conjugation, to call it that way. In fact, it's translation into English results in two words.
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua I meant adverb, little typo up there Billy!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner xix could be you (pl) the object? but if it is ix xix, -ix must be subject, so it is a verb in 2. p. pl.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner el primer x marca el pasado..oops, sorry, switched into spanish..
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner xix (you plural did something -> c'oje')
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner i am now sure it is past, because of the first x and 2.p.pl. because of ix
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Yeap Maria. We would now have.....

"You (pl. fam.) did/have/had [c'oje'] at/in school [najtir]".
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner pa wasn't it "at"?
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven You have c'oje' at school formerly.

Just going out on a limb saying it's

You've been at school before.

?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner You (pl. fam.) did/have/had [c'oje'] at school [najtir]
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Billy James Brightraven... It's not really "before". But the rest of the sentence is 100% good. Think... It has to do with 'ancient' and it is a concept related to 'before'. But it isn't 'before'.
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Context, you great gift to man. xD
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Well, it's a short sentence and there aren't many words. I need the exact translation, otherwise I'm not giving this one away :P
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner no es "anteriormente"?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua In English that would be 'previously', so no.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I have no idea...adverb, related to before..?? I am stuck.
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner It is a normal english word that makes sense in that sentence?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner and it was also not "formerly" was it?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Nope, not "formerly". It's three words, an adverb as a whole
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner in ancient times?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner in former times?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner long time ago?
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner where are all the others?
Dago Lesmes Suagua
Dago Lesmes Suagua Maria Weidner, in ancient times! You got it :D
Or "in the past" too. "Past" is called "ancient times".
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner YEAH! You've been at school in ancient times :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner the lonely winner :(
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I'm here. :P
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner So why didn't you join in? Or do you speak qiché as well??
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Im busy at work...
Maria Weidner seems like you have been online for 24 hours lol
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner No, I' ve worked, I went out, I havebeen shopping, I cooked.. :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner But I work at home, so... :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Isn't working at home fantabulous! hihi
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Indeed! :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I think I'll wait till tomorrow, nobody seems to be in the mood for a new round. And Victor only watches secretly... :p
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I'll return in the morning.... :) I hope I'm of some use. I wasn't able to be of any in today's rounds :(
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Lucky you! I wish I could work from home...
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline The disadvantage of working at home is that every room is an office, and when you're happily posting about all and nothing on Omniglot, you think to yourself, "well, I could be working".
:)
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven We're always in the mood! It's just that sometimes we sleep ;)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline "sleep"..What is this word that you speak? It appears you are speaking in tongues again and thus leaving us mere mortals confounded!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter haha... sleep is the condition when you lost/waste significant amount of your time. when you accomplished this sleep thing, usually you might feel physically better... :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter and that is what Im going to do in the next few hours ;)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Oh, thank you for this explanation! I think I'll try it... once I've done this piece of work...:)
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Next challenge! I need something to mull over on my flight :p
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner I'll go to bed soon, so there'll be no one helping and guiding you through...
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven It's okay, we've dun runs with the lead away for some time :p but if you'd rather not, no pressure :p

(I see you Arief!)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Yes, I am here now :)
First question of my day: Did Maria Weidner win?
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Hai, Arief-san.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo My Japanese is very very rusty. Was that hello or yes, Billy-san? :D
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven It was "yes" ^^
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Sarah Karoline, Maria Weidner, for me, the disadvantage of working at home is..... When there's no progress with work, I am here... When there's no progress here, I continue building our website :D
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Domo, Billy-san :D
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Seems like there's no challenge to accompany Billy James Brightraven's flight :P
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven I guess I'll have time to peruse my Croatian for Nobs book then :p
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Oh Hrvatski, one of the language that has way too many consonant clusters
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Or not enough!

Okay, enough.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo ↑ Vctrwhlstrndskrstrm :D
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Arief Wibowo: Another advantage of working at home is that we have time to peruse "Complexities of Croatian AND Slovak for Those Wworking at Home" when there is no Språkspel/Sprogspel/Málspil to play! hihi

All: I think there are more consonant clusters in Polish or Czech than in Croatian. I think there are too many vowels in the Balkan languages. They could easily lose some!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner ok, I am back. Wait a moment! :)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Sarah Karoline, or reading "Making Vegetable Salad and Bread 'n Butter for Dummies" :P

Unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure of knowing how to differentiate Eastern European languages... I failed many Great Language Game (http://greatlanguagegame.com/) rounds because of this too :(
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Vanakkam, Maria Weidner, eppadi irukeenga?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo (↑ no, that's not this round's challenge :P )
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline THat's next on my list: Translating "Making Vegetable Salad with Bread 'n Butter" into Croatian.
I played that game the other day, and got mostly Slavic and Asian languages. I need to work more on Asian languages! haha
The South-Slavic languages are more recognisable by having more vowels, or rather less or shorter consonant clusters than West Slavic. I have a list comparing the various Slavic languages somewhere...
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Ok, got it!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Should I post it here? Arief
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner New post or continue here?
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline Perhaps Arief is making a sandwich!
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline p.s. Maria, How do you get just a first name to highlight? My tagging is rather unsuccessful. :)
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Erase the surnames! :)
Sarah Karoline
Sarah Karoline I tried that, but the first and surname are in a block, so they all disappear. I'll try again, Maria
It worked!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Strange... I have various blocks..:/
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner YEAH, YOU GOT IT!
Maria Weidner
Maria Weidner Ok, I'll continue here, seems easier. SO Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström, Vincensiu Denis, Sarah Karoline,, Dago Lesmes, Billy James Brightraven, Christian James Meredith, Arief wibowo (why it doesn't tag?) GO!
