Round 219

Round
<< 1< 218220 >282 >>
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Ok, starting the next round with my language of choice:

Round 219:

Heut is 's xäctly zwanzig Johr
Dass ich bin owwe naus;
Nau bin ich widder lewig z'rück
Und steh am Schulhaus an d'r Krick
Juscht nächst ans Daddy's Haus.

Don't know who to tag...
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven This reminds me of a Penn. Dut.(?) round we had some time ago :P

Nau, bin ich aus.
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger It definitely seems Germanish; maybe it's one of the many dialects of German, some of which I hear are pretty divergent?
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo We had the first 2 lines from the same poem... But there's 3 more lines to decipher, so the round is legit :)
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Tagging Anna Christian Victor Дайте Sarah Rasmus Arief Andy Maria Nicolás Matteo Helene Adrian
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Okay, great, happy that it isn't invalid! Yep, Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch it is! My heritage language.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Jake Kissinger, it's Dutch! :P
(It's actually German but it's Dutch)
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Yay, I got the right language.
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia Does having certified C1 German take me out of this round? (legit question)
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee I was about to guess some variety of Frisian.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee No, I wouldn't think so.
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven That's up to you, if you find it too easy, then, probably more fun to let someone else solve it :P
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin No, I think you're still in. But like Billy James Brightraven said, if you find it too easy then drop out.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Nicolás Straccia, if you look at it and can understand the meaning with minimal effort (let's say < 5 minutes work), then you're out :)

The fun thing about our "minimal effort rule" is that it works without regarding one's language comprehension.

For example, if you have known the translation of the poem before, you're also out... :)
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Which is why I dropped out of the Picard round. I got most of it by just looking at it
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia Hm, there might be some false friends, but nah, I think I understand it. I'm out.

It's only that I don't have much time atm to do actual research, and when I see a round I kind of understand I get too excited : P
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Though remember, 'tis a self-imposed rule for sake of fun. Half the game has been won by people getting stuff in < 5 minutes though, especially with very commonly spoken/known Yuropian standard languages :P
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia True :v
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven :v :v
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia (^^^)
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia (Y)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo When the game stallified (or dodmati?), 5 minute rule is to be broken :D
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Yuropian? Some Native American family, maybe related to or influenced by Chonan? :P
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia Yuropik is in that family, I think : P
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent It does look Germanish. I think I could <5 it. I will check back later maybe.
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Maybe I should have changed the orthography to an English-based one for the sake of fun.
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven I would posit there maybe being a relation to Ooralix or Shemtik/Aphradziatik for Yuropian :o
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Nah, I think you're fine.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Yuropian is a language spoken on the colony on Jupiter's moon.

By the way, look up ?59 if you want to research the round...
Guess who won that round?
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia Billy That reminded me of that thread on "missionary orthography" ^^
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee http://sprogspelet.arwi.im/round/59/
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven So that's why it seemed familiar, Arief!
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee I hate you, Billy :P .
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen You rang!? so are we just translating this, today?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter So many comments, yet no single attempt...
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Maybe it is the time to invite our progenitor to play this game!!
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Vincensiu, is right, this is great for die Malin, die Deutsch lernt!
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Malin Elisabeth Nilsson, we summon thee... :D
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen 1st attempt:
Heut is 's xäctly zwanzig Johr
Dass ich bin owwe naus;
Nau bin ich widder lewig z'rück
Und steh am Schulhaus an d'r Krick
Juscht nächst ans Daddy's Haus.

Today it's exactly twenty year
that I been [owwe naus].
Now I am [widder lewig] returned
and staying at the Schulhasu at the stream
just near my father's house.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Helping Thatcher Donovan to moderate:
Schulhaus and krick can be translated into English.
Daddy isn't daddy.
nächst isn't just near. :)

(I am not allowed to play the round, I researched the poem after ?59 ended, and I still remember the full answer)
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven Why do you glottal stop the rounds? :o

/ˈʔfɪftinaɪn/ ? ;)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Because sometimes the round gtotally stopped :P
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia *badum-tss* *round of applause*
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia *Arief bows on the stage* *the crowd goes crazy*
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia [ok, Ill stop now]
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo said "More attempts please!!" :D
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen 2nd attempt:
Today it's exactly twenty year
since i went away.
Now I am a capricorn/goat and returned
and staying at the school house by the creek
near the lord's house.
(but why someone would be a capricorn i have no idea. so i guess it's not that)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Oh wait: widder - wædder - goat - capricron = MAN? Now I am a man?
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Today it's exactly twenty year
since i went away.
Now I am a man and have returned
and staying at the school house by the creek
near the lord's house.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter could lewig be related to lewe?
so widder lewig = lively man??
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen good point.
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia I think the key to "widder" is odd spelling. Let's see if the other moderators agree.
John Shimmin
John Shimmin I agree with both Vincensiu Dionisiu (but not the exact translation) and Nicolás but should probably not participate here.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter This round is probably the round with the most chit-chat rather than actual translation attempt :p
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia So there should be more chit, and less chat?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Well cheat is obviously forbidden ;)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen I don't know about that... already did 2 attempts. How is it will there be feedback only when everything is right or will one of the moderators comment on the second translation?
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia Hahah XD hadn't thought of that one, Vincensiu
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Thatcher, How was Rasmus' translation??
Have we got a winner?
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia I was trying to give some feedback, but waiting for the actual moderators to confirm.
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen 3rd attempt:
Today it's exactly twenty year
since i went away.
Now I am back a livelier man
and staying at the school house by the creek
near the house of the Lord.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Most of us were locked out by the minimal effort rule :(

By the way, I forgot to say:
3rd line: no "man" in the sentence, but there's a variant of "lively".
4th line is almost perfect, I am sorry for not catching the error earlier: steh is not stay :)
5th: Daddy is not lord, Daddy is related to your daddy... *hint hint hint*
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen tsk tsk... thought I was been clever with the "Lord"... if it was peen. dutch.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Related to Daddy but not Lord??
Hmmmm...
sugar daddy? Boss? Landlord? Master? Uncle? Grandad? Teddy Bear???
Nicolás Straccia
Nicolás Straccia being cleaver is like being sharp?
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Nicolás Straccia something like that ;)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Use Occam's razor to cleave thru this hint:
There's 2 phrases in Vincensiu Dionisiu's list that's related to his daddy... One of them! ;)
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo More hint: No sugar involved, so it's definitely not sugar daddy or gummy bear.

I can neither confirm nor deny other bears...
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen related to your daddy - Uncle / granddad... I guess granddad in Dad with suffix could make sense.
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo Correct!!! You are (hint-)cleaver!
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen OH COME ON!!! ;) it's Sunday...
Arief Wibowo
Arief Wibowo 'Tis a great day to eat (drink?) sundae in Granddad's house while reminiscing upon going away 20 years ago! :)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen last attempt with the cleaver today:
Heut is 's xäctly zwanzig Johr
Dass ich bin owwe naus;
Nau bin ich widder lewig z'rück
Und steh am Schulhaus an d'r Krick
Juscht nächst ans Daddy's Haus.

Today it's exactly twenty years
since i went away.
Now I am back a vigorous/lively/spirited person
and living in the school house by the creek
near the house my granddad.
Christian James Meredith
Christian James Meredith Rasmus kick down "lively" to something a bit more direct, fix up that last sentence (words are right, just need to be put around into something that makes a tad more sense - you can use the 's that's in the "Dutch" above).

Might be easier to make that 3rd sentence, BTW, to: "Now I am back, ____". That's the format the translation I've seen uses. Then you're done :)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Today it's exactly twenty years
since i went away.
Now I am back a softer person
and living in the school house by the creek
near my granddad's house.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Never mind me; I'm just passing through! I know what that last word translation should be, but if I stjälcuri, I'll win the round, and it's not a good time for me to host :-P I'll remain content to merely observe :-)
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Sorry I had to sleep.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter that's OK Thatcher, everyone need to sleep, some has to work, some has to study for exam, others has got a baby that constantly need to be attended :P
we can understand that some people have to be away for a while, and also, we are happy that you return :D
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin "Living" in the third sentence is not right, neither is "soft man"(not even close on that one), "near my granddad house" is close but not completely correct.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins I'll go ahead and try the last sentence :-P I'm intrigued by this round.

Would it be, "next to granddad's house", by any chance?
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Yes, though you are missing the first word. It sounds like what it is in english.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins "Just next to granddad's house"
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Yep.
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin So this is what we have so far:
Today it's exactly twenty years
since i went away.
Now I am back (a softer person)
and (living) in the school house by the creek
just next to granddad's house.

() = not correct.

Hint on "steh", it is like what it is in Standard german.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Rasmus wanna edit your answer? :)
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger What would you accept for "steh?"
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Sorry, removed that, I won't accept it anymore seeing as it's so close to the standard german for the same word.
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin That's a hint.
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins "stay"? So, "I stay" or "staying"?
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent stand? (Taking "steh" out of context...I haven't looked back at the passage...)
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin You have got it Adrian!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Dare I make an attempt? I feel like ninjaing the entire game if I do that... :/
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven It is tradition Victor!
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Hmmmm my personal suggestion, let's wait for a little while and give Rasmus a chance to fix his answer. There are many new players here who haven't known you well Victor :)
U know what I meant :)
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström But Billy, I've been gone for so long! Of course, Vincensiu! You know what, if nothing happens, ping me and I might come back! :)
Billy James Brightraven
Billy James Brightraven O tempora, o mores, quando stielcuri interdictus est!
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent I don;t remember seeing stielcuri in Latin before.....
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström "Stielcuri" would be the latinisation of "stjälcuri", a word from the weird Swedonesian that was invented a while ago! :P
Adrian Baxt-Dent
Adrian Baxt-Dent I did realise that. I got the idea of the sentence(s) as well. "Oh the times, oh the traditions (is it traditions???) when stjalcuri is forbidden!!"
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Victor, I'm going to bed in less than an hour today. Gotta sleep a bit earlier to prepare for my exam tomorrow, So I wouldn't be able to ping you unfortunately. Sorry...
And if it happens that you turned out to be our next host, let me draw your attention to the rules page; section: Hosting a round :p
Well, I believe you are senior enough to know them by heart and as a senior spragspellers, I'm pretty sure you know to host a fun and decent round :D
And you did bring fun in all your round :D
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen 4th attempt:
Today it's exactly twenty years since i went away.
Now I am back where I will further live
and standing at the school house by the creek
just near my granddad's house.
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Closer with the "where I will live", but still not too near it. Plus, you forgot "just" in the last sentence, as Anna Robbins figured out "Juscht" is just.
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen oh yeah, forgot to put that on in my draft.
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin All of the words in the sentence are pretty close to their german equivalents, although "widder" isn't as far as I can find.
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin This may help you (but not for widder, can't find widder) http://bradhumblesamishcountry.yolasite.com/pennsylvania-dutch-dictionary.php
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen The only I found as a Capricorn... ;)
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin OOOOhhh here this dictionary will help you https://archive.org/stream/commonsensepenns01lins/commonsensepenns01lins_djvu.txt
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Now I am back further in life?
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin closer, read through second dictionary.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter A quick skim from the dictionary shows:
widder - again
lewe - life
but no entry for lewig.... so assuming lewig is related to lewe,
then it should be life again....
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin closer, you just have to find out what form of "life" :)
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen the agony!
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin I'll give you a hint, it's an adjective.
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Now I am back living again?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter There's a bit of discrepancy between both dictionaries:
one of them shows "Lewe" as life, no further form, declensions or conjugation
The other one shows "Lava" as life,
other forms: Laivestzeil, goal, or end of life.
Laivestzeit, lifetime.
Laivalong, lifetime
Laiveswondle, biography
Laivich, alive.
Lebdawg, cuorse of life
Ivoiid laiva, country life

Is it safe to assume widder lewig as alive again?
laivich sounds like lewig though..... V in German = w, and if you force it enough, it sounds similar :p
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin yes, you've got the right idea Vincensiu. Now construct the sentence.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Rasmus Let's settle it once and forever :P
I'm off to bed in less than 10min, and incapable of hosting a round.
Post the complete translation, and the victory will be granted to you :D
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Rasmus I think you have it, the exact answer I'm looking for is "alive" as Vincensiu found, but you got a close enough word!
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Has Rasmus ever hosted a round? :)
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Nope, it'll be his first victory.
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen ;) since this is my first participation ever, I think not... and the last one was in danish.
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Today it's exactly twenty years since i went away.
Now I am back alive again
and standing at the school house by the creek
just near my granddad's house.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Then tillykke with your next round! :D
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen you realise this means it will be danish again... ;)
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin And we have a winner!!!! Congratulations Rasmus Bach Ottosen! Thanks to everyone who participated!
The translation which I've been using was as follows:

Heut is 's xäctly zwanzig Johr
Dass ich bin owwe naus;
Nau bin ich widder lewig z'rück
Und steh am Schulhaus an d'r Krick
Juscht nächst ans Daddy's Haus.

Today it's exactly twenty years
Since I went up and away;
Now I have returned once more, alive
And stand at the school by the creek
Just next to Grandpa's house.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Rasmus. Good Luck with your first hosting :D
I'm officially off to bed now, have fun everyone!
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Thanks for the all help. Great round! very interesting getting to know penn. Dutch. veil spass!
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin It was fun for me also because PA Deitsch has been on my list for a while, and I found lots of resources for it by hosting that.
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen nice. Since I got some people here, a question: What are you up to, would you like it danish or if you want I can attempt one i Malagasy. But that will take some time to see if there is adequate resources out there for that.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Well, I am a Swede. :P That says it all.

A spoken round might make it more interesting, however!
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen Last round was a danish spoken round.
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin
Thatcher Ó Donnabháin Looking forward to see what the next round is like. Danish would be easier, but Malagasy would be fun too
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I see. :P Malagasy sounds great! ^^
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Congratulations, Rasmus :-D anything you decide to choose should be fun :-)
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Please do Malagasy. Danish is cool too, though.
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee And congrats! First win, second join. Nice!
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Victor, I think you missed the round Helene co-hosted with me :P
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I missed a lot of rounds! ^^
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee But the next time you win, do another round in Avestan. Or any other older Iranian language.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström Me? :o
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee Yes
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I'm just surprised anyone remembered! It was my favourite round!
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee I didn't remember. I wasn't there yet. I've boredly looked at earlier rounds. The first round I played was 194.
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström
Victor Wåhlstrand Skärström I see. Hmm... Avestan is a treat...
Wrik Chatterjee
Wrik Chatterjee It's Sanskrit's cool brother.
Jake Kissinger
Jake Kissinger In anticipation of a round that may be in Malagasy, I have chosen this for Rasmus' congratulations card. I know this is a word for congratulations in German; I don't know if it is the same in Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch or not.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Rasmus So are we getting Danish or Malagasy?
**waiting with excitement**
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen well yes, that's the issue isn't it... I would totally do malagasy and that would be so much fun, for me, but I simply can't figure out if there is enough online resources for peps. to do a translation.
When should the next round start?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter As soon as you can :D
we are waiting :D
Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen your waiting ;) great! the agony of taking office! just kill me with a cleaver now!
Right! okay. I'll tell you what then, I'll something in danish and maybe get somebody danish to help me moderate and I'll do the malagasy the next time I win.
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Sure, Billy, Helene & Victor probably can co-moderate the round.
Sarah Karoline

Rasmus Bach Ottosen
Rasmus Bach Ottosen so how does this work, where and how to I post the next round?
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter Just here in the comment section, in the same place where you post
" so how does this work, where and how to I post the next round?"
Anna Robbins
Anna Robbins Just announce it here, and post it in the same comment, unless this thread has gotten too long and you'd rather start a new one (and then you'd have to tag everyone again).
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter
Marius Vincenzii Dennischter 565 comments including this one, so I guess this thread is capable to host another round.
Just post the the next round here :)
